Chairman, ColorCode Group CEO FirstNews Nation Global Media Ltd Dean, School of Communications and Media Studies Secretary General- National Guild of Broadcast Managers (Private)
Employment & Staffing in Broadcasting: The Need for a New Approach Considering the "Body Language" of the present and future Economy - nationally and globally perhaps it is time for the broadcast to reconsider it's recruitment policy framework. Apparently, it is as growingly distressing for Media Organizations to pay salaries and allowances as it is for staff to keep up with the non payment and still thrive personally. We believe the time has come for the Industry to consider cutting overheads by adopting Part-Time/Contract engagements, cutting down on staff strength and focusing on a few key areas- probably retaining Management, Programme Supervision, Business Development, Technology and Content Creation - otherwise they should shut down and sell off their licenses. With the shocks recently being observed by the broadcast and media industry with the advent of new technologies, artificial Intelligence, mobile content providers and more, it is time for @nbcgovng and broadcast practitioners as well as their Publishing counterparts to have a rethink Times are changing and the Industry is still standing still. Something has to give! The current framework is not sustainable and cannot continue this way! As it stands today, a job in broadcasting CANNOT be full-time, talents should be unencumbered to source of alternate sources of income while keeping up with their radio engagements possibly twice or at most thrice a week. It may even become necessary that broadcast stations should lease/sublet their airtime to professional and certified Content Service Providers (firms which broadcasters can jointly co-own) for an agreed percentage or terms. It's just as we've maintained, broadcast stations must cut down on their man-hours and focus on about 30% of indigenous content and let independent content providers provide the rest. 2024 will should prove to be a strategic turning point in the operations of broadcast stations, otherwise things will get worse and despite the multiplicity of media houses and the new ones opening up, we will have numerous voice boxes nobody is listening to. Let's discuss which of these two media, Radio and Television a better medium of communication. Hello LinkedIn community! When comparing Radio and Television as medium of communication, it's important to recognize that each has its own strengths and limitations. While Television provides a more visual and immersive experience, Radio has the advantage of being more accessible and portable, while also being able to engage the listener's imagination. Ultimately, the choice between the two mediums will depend on the specific context, audience, and purpose of communication. To make a fair comparison between radio and television, it's essential to consider factors such as accessibility, interactivity, engagement, and the content's nature. Radio is a highly accessible and portable medium due to its affordability and widespread availability. Radios are relatively cheap, making them accessible to a larger population, even those living in remote areas or places with limited access to electricity. Additionally, radios can be battery-operated, making them portable and allowing people to listen while doing other activities. However, television requires electricity and equipment, such as a TV set and a stable broadcast signal, making it less accessible in areas with limited infrastructure or economic constraints, even though it has become more accessible over time. Engagement and Imagination. Radio utilizes auditory stimulation to encourage listeners to engage their imagination. The lack of visuals prompts the listeners to create mental images based on the audio content, which can be particularly powerful for storytelling, news, and radio dramas. However, Celebration offers a more immersive experience by combining audio and visual elements. It presents information, visuals, and nonverbal cues directly to the audience, making it suitable for visual storytelling, educational programs, and live events. Radio shows can encourage community and engagement through interactive segments such as calling shows, live discussions, and interviews. This allows listeners to participate by sharing their opinions and interacting with the hosts. Such interactive features help create a sense of connection and engagement among the audience. While TV also offers interactivity, it usually requires additional technology or platforms for viewers to engage actively. However, live chats, social media interactions, and online forums can enhance viewer engagement during broadcasts. To sum up, television provides a captivating visual experience, while radio is exceptional in terms of being easily accessible, portable, and encouraging the listener's imagination. The decision between these two mediums relies on various considerations such as audience context and desired communication outcomes. Both mediums are incredibly beneficial in their own ways, and their effectiveness is reliant on their specific goals and the communication process's dynamics. #wiuc #massmedia
