During my journalism days, I witnessed a common pitfall that many spokespersons fell prey to—allowing journalists to put words in their mouths. It's a tricky situation that requires finesse to ensure your message remains accurate and true to your intent. Here are some strategies to help you navigate this challenge and maintain control over your narrative: 📣 Don't Accept Inaccuracies: If a journalist paraphrases your words inaccurately, resist the urge to accept it unless it's entirely accurate. Politely correct the statement in your own words. YOUR MESSAGE SHOULD REFLECT YOUR INTENTIONS, NOT THE JOURNALISTS INTERPRETATION. 📣 📣 Clarify Misconceptions: If the journalist's question contains inaccuracies or assumptions, calmly clarify any misconceptions without accepting their framing. Redirect the conversation to the key points you wish to convey. Your aim is to ensure that your message is presented in the most accurate light. 📣 📣 📣 And most importantly, prepare and practice. Conduct regular media trainings, as preparation without expert feedback loop is worse than winging it. Do let me know have you ever fallen prey to this? #mediatraining #mediatrainer Video source: Cunk on Earth/Netflix

Got something to say to a journalist but you don't want to be identified as the source? You should know your options so familiarize yourself with these terms. Not for attribution: The reporter will quote your statements directly but not name you as the source. However, a general description of your position may be used (government official, party insider, etc.) For TV, digital, or radio purposes, your identity may be modified by altering your voice or blurring your appearance. On background: The reporter can paraphrase or use the essence of your statement, but won't use direct quotes. A general description of your position may be given. Off the record: Ask a reporter first if something can be off the record. The reporter can agree or refuse. If they agree, the reporter will not share the information you give them publicly. It can only be used to give the reporter some perspective or understanding of the story. That said, reporters rarely see the value in knowing something that can't be reported, so most will avoid off the record discussions. These definitions are for imformational use only but understanding these terms can help you navigate conversations with journalists. #mediarelations #mediatraining #journalism #communications

Marketing Executive with experience in Content Production, Brand Partnerships and Integrated Marketing
Brands supporting news has been declining at an alarming rate for decades and the statistics cited by Lou Paskalis, chief strategy officer for Ad Fontes Media, are worrisome. According to Paskalis, “In a 15-year period ending in March of 2020 … we witnessed an 80 percent decline in advertiser investments in news, which has resulted, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, in a 50 percent decline in the number of people working in newsrooms in roughly the same period.” As someone who values the importance of a free press, I greatly appreciate the important work of Ad Fontes Media in helping to promote media literacy and combat misinformation. The ad community’s support is critical to the cause. #AdFontesMedia #MediaLiteracy #FreePress
