Longish post here - are eBay missing out with their method of treating Below Standard sellers? I'd like to see a "managed probation" system which I think would be a win win. Background: I often get approached by clients for whom eBay hasn't been a focus channel (maybe they're bigger on Amazon or direct) and they've fallen foul of eBay standards. Lots of sellers are unaware of the low-tolerance of some metrics on eBay. For instance there's a defect called "cases closed without seller resolution" where if you don't close a case in a certain time, you get a ding - the tolerance for which is 2 cases if you're small or 0.3% of transactions if you're a bit bigger. This is just one metric. It's good that eBay has high standards, but when sellers come to me they say "we've dropped to Below Standard by mistake, but we want to do well on eBay and now we're going to give it more time, focus and love - how do we get back up to a better level?" At which point I tell them 1) It'll be a minimum of 3 months, but most likely 12 months before their defects will be time-spent 2) that they're being charged an extra 6% final value fee (6 absolute points - so from 12 to 18%) 3) that they're supressed in search so can't trade their way out of trouble. Some will persevere but once you're below standard it's really hard to get out and most will fall by the wayside. I think there would be real value for eBay to say to such sellers "do you want to do better? We can educate you intensively so you don't make these mistakes again and put you on probation so our buyers are protected..any more mistakes AT ALL and it's a perma-ban!" They could charge money for the re-education and monitoring of the account and eventually take them off probation and back on normal standards measurement. It's very possible to turn around an eBay acount completely in weeks, I know from experience.
