As mentioned on my post last week, I am going to share hints and tips from my 32 years of Retail Buying over the next 12 weeks Week 1 is : Is Buying the right job for you? ❤️ Do you love products, Whatever the category? I remember nearly crying when I thought I was going into the haberdashery department but after a weekend of researching the category I found loads of positives .. it didn't happen, but I was almost disappointed !  ❤️Check your role profile, being a Buying Assistant/ Category Assistant is not an easy job .. and you need to ensure you are up for the challenge. You may think I am stating the obvious here, however in my 32 years in retail  I have coached and developed many people who actually became very disillusioned when the job wasn’t what they imagined.. When I went into my role which was then called Buyers Clerk (yes I am old) I was so excited to become part of a buying team I didn’t even really understand what half the things on my job description were .. so in hindsight I should have checked but in reality I didn't care  - I was going to become a Buyer and that was my goal! ❤️ Your role profile needs to become a document you look at weekly - not every 6 months  - diary to check it once a week - have a spreadsheet that  records every time you demonstrate evidence of how you have ticked off a KPI - this will really help you in your performance reviews  ❤️ Get yourself a mentor/coach -- ask around for someone that is a level above you who is not in your direct team - you can then ask them questions that perhaps you don’t want your line manager to be aware of (like how do you calculate margin !!) also you need to hear what skills they demonstrated to gain promotion ❤️ Be prepared to roll up your sleeves .. I spent years opening boxes (my fave part of the job unless the samples had fleas) pushing cages of stock about, running up and down to the basement stock room, going to shops to get samples , making coffee’s, getting suppliers from reception - the list goes on and on - every time I did this I learnt something new so don’t be precious about what you have to do that isn't on your role profile ❤️ Be present - you won’t like this - but if you want to learn by osmosis you need to be in the office - you need to learn from your colleagues and you can’t do that at home as easily - especially preparing for assortment reviews for example - I learnt so much by watching and assisting.. ❤️ Be patient - yes some people are in the right place at the right time and get opportunities but some people have to graft and go over and above time and time again .. it doesn’t mean you wont get there..

Everyday merchandisers have an opportunity to learn something new. If merchandisers learn it then they will update themselves and ready for future with their practical experience. If merchandisers deny to learn it, then they will loose a great opportunity from their career. Every success depends on the practical experience. Then we have to make ourselves updated.

Why working in retail is rewarding… 3. Careers- there are so many career opportunities when working in retail. Employees can start as a bagger, greeting customers as they bag their groceries, then become a cashier, learning to use technology while greeting customers , then climb the ladder to become a Customer Service Representative. Opportunities are always available to you. Having the right mindset, experience and skills in different areas, you are able to advance your career to become a manager or further your education through the company. Working in a field you love and are happy have endless rewards. If you love your job, the reward is having the luxury of enjoying the job you have to go to on the days you are scheduled, some people don’t have such luxury. Retail offers a diverse range of opportunities to choose a path towards a career that is right for you. Stayed tune for reason 4, why retail is rewarding.

Example for a Retail Position: As a retail professional, key keywords to include might be "customer service," "visual merchandising," "inventory management," and "point of sale (POS) systems": Professional Summary: Dedicated retail associate with a proven track record of delivering exceptional customer service and exceeding sales targets. Skills Section: Proficient in POS systems, adept at inventory management, and skilled in visual merchandising techniques. Job Descriptions: Managed customer inquiries, maintained stock levels, and ensured store presentation aligned with brand standards. One of the most important things one should do as a new joiner is go to trade (if applicable). It's one thing to read product descriptions on excel and Google product pictures and another actually seeing the products upclose. Trade is a bit different when you are a new joiner because you may still be familiarizing yourself with all the company products so going into trade helps give you a visual representation of the product descriptions you've been working with in the office or hearing about during meetings. It's kinda like putting a face to a name. When you go into trade as a new joiner, you are able to see the flow of the products, find out how merchandising is done (very different for beauty), meet some of the people you will be working with, see how one small details like a broken chair can ruin the customer experience and soooooo so much more! Yes, it's easy to simply Google pictures of the products you are working with but I can promise you that seeing the products in store is so much more fruitful that's why I'll never stop stressing the importance of trade visits. There are learnings and observations that you can get from going to trade that no amount of data or research can teach you. PS for job seekers: If possible and applicable, go to an outlet that sells the products of the company you'll be interviewing with.
