This week, I'm sharing insider tips that set you apart from the crowd and fulfil what your Line Manager secretly hopes for! 🎯 Tip 1: Begin With The End In Mind What job do you want?. Want to be a Store Manager? Get your hands on that job description, your HR Manager will have a copy of it. I then want you to write next to it either Red/Amber or Green 🔴 Red: No evidence of the skill 🟠 Amber: Some evidence of the skill 🟢 Green: Nailed it, backed with solid proof 📊 Collect Tangible Evidence 📈 Whether it's sales results or real-life examples, gather concrete proof of your skills and accomplishments. There's a lot to be said for what our early work experience teaches us. A couple of years ago when I was exploring a new opportunity, I created a "book of my career journey" highlighting how I had developed an essential skill for the job at each. While I was ultimately unsuccessful in that process (something hindsight would allow me to see as a good thing!), the exercise helped me understand my own journey more deeply. My first job with a paycheck was in retail. Working in retail teaches you a lot and since I worked at a party goods store, I got to learn a whole new vocabulary! It was helpful, though, because a lot of people don't know all of the different elements that can go into a party. If I listened deeply to my customers, I could help them discover new solutions or ways to enhance their planned celebrations. During busy seasons, we would often sell out of sought after merchandise which allowed the sales associates to get creative with ways to help customers achieve their goals. I also learned how to handle disappointed and frustrated customers -- a skill that would later be necessary in my event work. And as an added bonus, I got really good at filling and tying balloons very quickly! What were the most valuable lessons you learned at your first job?
