A few things I have learnt of recent in the Corporate World: 1. Certifications are a great way to pad your CV and make you look more intelligent to those around you. Aside from that, certifications are an entry level commitment that require annual "official" maintenance to maintain in some cases. 2. Most knowledge can be found online for free across a number of potential outlets. If you can't afford the certification, learn the knowledge anyway. We are rapidly approaching a world where paper documentation of your intelligence is not as valuable as it used to be. 3. What is valuable then? A person who consistently gets the job done, responds to challenges with flexibility in their approach and opinions, and works with a team to achieve a shared goal. Couldn’t agree more with this gem of advice! 🪖🎖️ Transitioning out of the military, I realized every task I accomplished had a touch of project management magic. From navigating customs to balancing budgets, it’s surprising how our military experiences shape us into adaptable professionals, isn’t it? In the civilian world, not every Project Manager role fits our unique background like a glove. It’s like being thrust into a high-ranking military position straight out of boot camp – unrealistic and, well, a bit ‘boot.’ 😄 But here’s the exciting part: our skills are sought after in more roles than we might think! While job titles might not scream ‘Project Manager,’ the responsibilities often do. Reading between the lines of job descriptions and chatting with industry experts (aka informational interviews!) unveils hidden gems of opportunities. It’s been worth the time and effort, in my experience. Staying positive through this process is key. Embracing unexpected paths might lead us to fulfilling roles we hadn’t imagined. Military Transition Tip Tuesday! 😎🤘🏻 You can put me in any job and I can do it. The military did it for +years with no training. We are breaking down the Project Manager😱 👉🏻Project Manager in Military Logistics 🪖🎖 The military is amazing in the fact that along the way in your career you receive training and so many areas that build you up to be able to take on larger tasks as you get promoted. They have schools, exercises, classes, and situations that give you the ability to be a Project Manager within the realm of military logistics. 👉🏻Transferable Skills into Project Management 🤓 Many of you have heard me say, the military is one giant Supply Chain/Transportation company. They are always moving people and gear from one location to another. In reality, all of you have a logistics background. From customs, budgets, international relations, or working with multiple departments/ branches of the military. All of these things are transferable into the civilian sector, but not into its entirety. 👉🏻Not all Project Managers are created equal 🤯 There are project managers of so many types: Neurovascular Development, Construction, IT, Cyber Security, Nuclear, Marketing, Financial, Toy Making, and the list goes on. One person isn’t qualified in everyone of those options. All of these require a set experience AND education to be able to manage projects within those sectors/areas. 👉🏻Boots do Boot things 🤠 Let’s tap back into the first paragraph again. The military trained you starting from when you joined. When you are applying to a Project Manager role, it’s like joining the military as an E7/O4. Now imagine if you were plucked into an E7 role straight out of boot camp. A company hiring you into Project Manager roles have an expectation that you will not need any training and will be able to hit the ground running. Keepin it 💯Applying to Project Manager roles that you don’t have the experience and education for is a boot thing to do. Don’t be a boot. 👉🏻Jobs you’re missing because the title doesn’t say Project Manager 🫣 Similar to the military, projects are managed by multiple entities and positions. Many times over Management positions need project management experience. I am posting one today that does. There are 1000’s of positions posted that ask for this type of experience within the Job Description. Reading the Job Description and doing Informational Interviews will help you gain the knowledge of how to find them and which to apply for. 👉🏻Staying positive 🥳 Keep your mind open to learning what’s out there.
