📏 Why do the properties of teams change as they grow? Thinking in terms of scale rather helps explain why targeted, insight led solutions are critical to deliver impact. A fascinating essay by Paul Dourish* has given me a new perspective on team size: “Scale and size… are not the same thing at all. If we think about simple massification, we might talk about the difference between a single cell and 10 million cells, but that’s not the same as talking about a human arm.” If you imagine team sizes on that scale between a single cell, an arm, a person & an entire population, it's made of literally the same things yet they are utterly different in physical form & act unique ways. Thinking about problem solving: you wouldn't try to heal your arm the same way as you would your digestive system. Painkillers are great to solve short-term aches, but are ultimately ineffective for chronic health issues. Compare that to the impact of emergent properties at work, where large groups of people create outcomes that are notoriously hard to predict. The complexity of behavioural drivers for a single person is multifaceted & incalculable; personal experiences & emotions, external events, social influence etc... The interactions between teams, functions & customers leads a system with so many variables that it becomes a unique entity with its own properties. People challenges need personalised solutions & an experimental approach to deployment. That doesn't mean not using off-the-shelf solutions. But it does mean defining clear outcomes & taking steps to understand your audience as a first step, before designing personalised, measurable campaigns built around your unique needs. *link to the essay is in the comments section. Massive thanks to Georgina Voss & her awesome book Systems Ultra for giving me loads of new ideas to explore 😊 #peopleexperience #learningdesign #scale #futureofwork

Join us, along with Foresight Factory, in Manchester on Wednesday 17 January, for our annual event looking at the pressing issues facing consumers across the year – and how brands need to address them to keep buyers on their side. In this breakfast session, we will highlight critical topics affecting consumers in the year ahead and what this means for how to effectively communicate with them. This year’s theme is Reckoning with Reality. As we approach 2024, the business landscape is poised for transformative shifts. Brands and consumers must grapple with these four critical questions: * In an era dominated by AI, how can we define and preserve our human essence, and what’s that the best way for brands to convey this? * Amid rapid health innovations, what constitutes genuine wellbeing, and how can health messaging align with consumer needs? * With climate change becoming increasingly urgent, what type of communication will resonate with consumers in this space? * In our globalized, digital world, how can brands foster true community and belonging? Book your space: https://ow.ly/WStg50Qp6Sn A further session will take place in London on Wednesday 24 January: https://lnkd.in/eXmQ542y
