We inspire and cultivate passion for data science through a unique partnership of academia and industry.
About us
In June 2018, Northwestern Mutual, Marquette University and the University of Wisconsin–Milwaukee came together to create the Northwestern Mutual Data Science Institute (NMDSI), a groundbreaking partnership that contributes to the formation of a technology ecosystem and advances southeastern Wisconsin as a national hub for technology, research, business and talent development, while creating an organic pipeline of tech talent in the area. As a Center of Excellence in five key areas – AI, AI & Data Ethics Bias, Health/Wealth Inequality, Behavioral Economics, and Financial Literacy – the NMDSI seeks to inspire the next generation of data scientists and cultivate passion for data science, galvanizing the brightest minds in Milwaukee and beyond to solve some of the world’s most pressing problems. Through our three pillars – research, talent, and community – we solve important business and community challenges by harnessing the power of data for research and scientific discovery, preparing future data science professionals to advance the region, and partnering with area non-profit organizations to address issues facing some of our most vulnerable populations.

A quick tip from our new NMDSI Research Program Officer Justice D. To secure funding for your research project, it’s crucial to find the right request for proposal (RFP) that aligns directly with the topic you’ve been researching. Once you’ve identified the RFP that fits your project, it's time to craft your proposal. Here are some essential tips for writing an effective research proposal: 1. Use the RFP as your writing guide 2. Focus on being concise 3. Clearly outline the research methodology 4. Set aside time for proofreading #nmdsiexpert

The power of AI will enhance productivity and augment human potential, not replace it. This is especially true in the financial services industry because, as our Northwestern Mutual Planning & Progress Study affirms: people entrust a human financial advisor with their biggest hopes and worries. I enjoyed sharing these insights with Javier E. David at Axios, including addressing the rapid emergence of GenAI and the ways it will - and won't - change the financial planning experience.

In last week’s speaker series, Dr. Nadiyah Johnson and Dr. Kevin Chovanec shared how to create a framework for implementing large language models (LLMs) in specific disciplines. “We must make sure we can understand how large language models work and how they make their recommendations. One of the ways we can do this is by putting together a framework for explainable AI within education,” said Dr. Chovanec. We are incredibly saddened to learn about the passing of Marquette University President Michael Lovell, who served on the Northwestern Mutual Data Science Institute’s Executive Steering Committee since our launch in 2018. Jonathan Stark, Ed.D., executive director of the NMDSI, reflects on the profound legacy Dr. Lovell leaves behind, “Dr. Lovell inspired many to live life with purpose and conviction. He was instrumental in forming the initial partnership between Marquette University, the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, and Northwestern Mutual. He will be remembered for his steadfast commitment and advocacy of such collaborations – and we thank him for helping establish the NMDSI as a leading corporate-academic partnership in Southeastern Wisconsin. He will be deeply missed.” https://lnkd.in/e9KmbMQq
