I'm obsessed with sunglasses, these are the top styles I'm eyeing this season
Bring on the sun.
It may still be chilly outside, but I'll argue there's no better time to invest in the best sunglasses for this season and beyond. After all, sunglasses are no longer a sunshine only accessory and if you get shopping now you'll be sure to have a pair you love when the holidays finally do roll around.
Whilst it may be tempting to scrimp on the accessory, it would be a false economy. You want to look for good quality, hard-wearing frames and lenses that will protect you from harmful UV rays. Plus, the right timeless pair will last you forever (see Prada for the best rectangle styles or Celine cat eye sunglasses), making the cost-per-wear of the item very minimal.
Sunglasses trends 2024:
While some key shapes will never go out of style, including cat eye and aviator sunglasses, there's no harm in dabbling in trends for the new season.
You might argue that oval frames never went anywhere, and you'd be right. But for SS24, they're getting the oversized treatment. Celine's Triomphe oval-frame sunnies have been a firm favourite with the street style set for a while now, popular amongst fashion insiders and celebrities, while Prada has released a pair of oval cat-eye frames to rival last year's ever-popular rectangle shape.
Bright pops of colour are one of the biggest summer trends we've seen on the catwalk, and it applies to accessories too. As we embrace having fun with fashion again, we're looking for frames in sorbet hues and bold colours. Case in point: Loewe's puffy sunglasses which have been particularly prominent among celebrities and influencers.
For the more casual customers, sporty frames are the trend to back this summer. Think futuristic shapes, mirrored lenses and minimal frames.
Finally, you can't have missed everyone's obsession with Y2K fashion. The '00s are undoubtedly back, and when it comes to sunglasses, that means frameless styles with colourful lenses made popular by the likes of Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera back in the day.
How to choose sunglasses:
It's always worth going to a specialist if you're serious about investing in a good pair of shades because they will be able to advise you on the best frames to suit your face shape. This service is available in most opticians and department stores.
One key thing is to make sure of the UV protection, as if your sunglasses don't protect you against UVB and UVA then they're essentially just a fashion accessory. Look for 100% protection to protect your eyes as much as possible.
Don't forget to check our Marie Claire vouchers site before you shop for the latest offers and discounts from your favourite brands—think, LUISAVIAROMA, Net-A-Porter and Wolf & Badger.

Which sunglasses offer the best eye protection?
In order to make sure you're protecting your eyes from UVA and UVB rays, the official recommendation is to opt for sunglasses with UV400 protection. These frames are able to filter our up to 99% of potentially harmful rays.
Are high-end sunglasses worth it?
When it comes to investment pieces, sunglasses are a great timeless item that transcends any season. From Loewe's classic sunglasses to Chanel's cat-eye frames, high-end brands hold multiple styles that continue to stand the test of time.
High-end sunglasses are usually made from high-quality materials that have a stronger lasting durability. Oftentimes, these frames offer superior protection from UVA and UVB rays to ensure sun protection. Ultimately, although expensive eyewear may come with a higher cost, the long-term benefits definitely help balance out the initial costs.

Penny grew up in France and studied languages and law at the Sorbonne Nouvelle University in Paris before moving to the UK for her MA in multimedia journalism at Bournemouth University. She moved to the UK permanently and has never looked back (though she does go back regularly to stock up on cheese and wine).
Although she's always loved fashion - she used to create scrapbooks of her favourite trends and looks, including Sienna Miller and Kate Moss' boho phase - her first job was at MoneySavingExpert.com, sourcing the best deals for everything from restaurants to designer sales.
However she quit after two years to follow her true passion, fashion journalism, and after many years of internships and freelance stints at magazines including Red, Cosmopolitan, Stylist and Good Housekeeping, landed her dream job as the Digital Fashion Editor at Marie Claire UK.
Her favourite part of the job is discovering new brands and meeting designers, and travelling the world to attend events and fashion shows. Seeing her first Chanel runway IRL at Paris Fashion Week was a true pinch-me moment.
