Several left-leaning figures on Twitter/X were furious over the lack of fact-checking during CNN’s presidential debate on Thursday, pointing to the debate’s co-moderators Dana Bash and Jake Tapper for allowing former President Donald Trump to lie repeatedly without being corrected.
The format did not include a fact-check, even though Trump is well-known for his various falsehoods. And those on the left were pretty unforgiving about it:
Donald Trump lied on a stage in front of @jaketapper about a statement that Jake Tapper himself confirmed on the record and Jake Tapper…DID NOTHING.
Absolutely pathetic. https://t.co/YXkiJVrOLh

CNN’s moderators failed miserably.
Zero fact-checking, little accountability when candidates dodge questions, uneven “moderation” of moments when the candidates challenge each other.
A public disservice.

I wish the CNN moderators did more fact-checking, letting the audience know when things are said that are flatly false. Not sure how it helps for a platform to transmit falsehoods disguised as facts.

We’re calling on CNN, as well as other networks broadcasting the the debates including ABC News and PBS News, to ensure that the upcoming debates are conducted with the utmost integrity and fairness, including live fact-checking and fair debate moderation.…

Shame on CNN for ZERO fact checking.

Absolutely disgraceful that the CNN moderators refuse to fact check Trump on anything. This is journalistic malpractice and it is decimating our democracy.
