FOR ANY STAR Wars fans out there feeling tired of the "same old, same old," well, I've got some good news for you: The Acolyte is definitively, decisively, objectively not that. Disney+'s new series comes from Russian Doll creator Leslye Headland, and after years of going up and down the timeline of the Skywalker family, filling in the various creaks and crevices left between cinematic episodes, things are finally going elsewhere with the intention of standing alone. Specifically, things are going to the past—100 years in the past.
The Acolyte is the first live-action project to be set during the era that Star Wars officially refers to as "The High Republic," with the series itself specifically coming 100 years before the events of Episode I: The Phantom Menace. The High Republic has already been explored in novels and comics, but The Acolyte sends things back in time to an era where the Jedi were strong, and in power—but heinous crimes are still occurring, and need to be investigated.
To make things more specific: The Acolyte centers on a young woman (Amandla Stenberg) who was once a Jedi Padawan, who, after a shocking murder, suddenly becomes a suspect when all signs point towards her. Luckily, her old master (Squid Game's Lee Jung-jae) believes in her, and the two reunite to investigate what really happened.
In a way, The Acolyte is kind of like a cross between True Detective and Stephen King's The Outsider (the book or the HBO series), set in a Star Wars world with Star Wars powers, abilities and characters.
