WHEREVER YOU’RE SOAKING up the water, a reliable pair of board shorts must be on deck. The latest styles on the market now come with quick-drying fabrics, added stretch, innovative designs, and lots of coverage. While it’s common to mix them up with swim trunks, the best board shorts for men are all about merging fashion and function. In other words, they’re designed to handle you riding the waves like surf legend Laird Hamilton, while also making you look sleek on the sand.

Best Board Shorts for Men

We’ve taken it upon ourselves to test over 55 board shorts to find the best ones that mix comfort and practicality. Dive into our list of the top picks to find a pair for your next activity in and around the great ocean.

What to Consider

Material

The best board shorts for men should be lightweight, movement-friendly, and water-repellent. Go for quick-drying materials like polyester or nylon. These fabrics won't weigh you down or curb your legs from moving when drenched in water. These days, more menswear brands infuse their shorts with spandex (e.g. lycra, elastane), giving you that extra stretch for flexibility, which is perfect for surfing or simply horsing around the beach.

Length

The length for board shorts—which typically can be as short as 8 inches in inseam to 22 inches in outseam—can make or break your summer style. To refresh your vocab, inseam measures the length on the inside of the leg, from the bottom up to the groin or crotch area; outseam measures the exterior of shorts from the bottom of the leg all the way up to the waistline.

If you're actually hopping up into a crouch on a surfboard, you'll need the extra fabric—and thus length—that protects more of your skin from the friction. But how long exactly? On this list, we’ve tested board shorts with 7” or even 5” inseams that reach mid-thigh, to board shorts with 11” inseam or 22” outseams that reach below the knee. Below are some of the tips we can give to you after trying board shorts on.

5 to 7” inseam

These are lengths for swim trunks, but if you’re not wearing board shorts to actually surf—you just like the style—then be our guest. You can show off your gains with these trendy fits that hit at mid-thigh. Between the two, we’ve found that the 7” inseam is more suitable as board shorts meant for the land.

8 to 10” inseam

This is the popular range for board shorts. Based on our testing, we found that 9” is the sure bet since it usually hits right in the middle of the knee to fully cover the thigh for most guys. Although, if you’re short, inseam lengths in this range might be too much coverage.

10” and above inseam

Here's the classic long fit for board shorts from the ‘90s. This length hits beyond the knee, and the corresponding outseam often goes over 20 inches. If you’re really going to surf, 10" or longer offers the most protection, and it's the most classic style.

How We Selected

Every board short on this list had to meet the core requirements of being comfortable, functional and versatile in terms of wearability. Our style team led by Fashion Director, Ted Stafford, tested these picks in and out of the water. We evaluated their anti-chafe technology, drainage, range of motion, and durability. Each and every one passed with flying colors, so rest assured that every option chosen will meet your board short needs. Read on to see which ones made the final cut.

Best Overall Board Shorts

Fair Harbor The Nautilus Boardshort

The Nautilus Boardshort
Now 50% Off
$34 at fairharborclothing.com
Pros
  • Smooth, lightweight fabric
  • Material helps fight off bad odor
  • Suitable for activities in and out of water
  • Four-way stretch
  • No annoying interior liner
Cons
  • No plus sizings

The board short gets a modern twist in this slightly slimmer cut and double-striped option from Fair Harbor. And after testing it out in our fashion closet, we've decided that it is a beach essential through and through.

We love how how lightweight and smooth the fabric is. But its function is by no means lightweight—the quick-dry and four-way stretch allowed us to move in (and out) the water comfortably. Polyester has a tendency to trap sweat and bacteria, leading to unpleasant smells. But that wasn't the case with The Nautilus, thanks to its odor-resistant properties, which can help mitigate BO.

Our Fashion Director, Ted Stafford especially loves how eco-friendly the short is. "This swimsuit made with recycled polyester—which is made from 11 plastic bottles—makes for feel-good beach attire while catching some waves," he says. "The four-way stretch fabric with water-repellent coating allows for optimum flexibility and comfort for all beach activities."

Most Classic Board Shorts

Birdwell 311 Nylon Boardshorts

311 Nylon Boardshorts
Pros
  • Moisture-wicking, quick-drying, and breathable
  • No liner offers a comfortable commando feel
  • Streamlined fit
Cons
  • Not as stretchy as other options on this list

We can't talk about the best board shorts for men without talking about Birdwell's 311—it's the iconic '90s surf short. It is, in fact, one of the first options we've testedafter all, we've all seen our dads sport this short at least once.

We love how commando-friendly it is since there's no liner. It's made with 100% nylon—which is moisture-wicking, quick-drying, and breathable—to be uber water-friendly. While nylon isn't as stretchy as spandex, in our experience of wearing this, it's still flexible enough for slow jogs on the beach.

Best Board Shorts with Pockets

Mack Weldon Swim Board Short

Swim Board Short
Pros
  • Functional pockets
  • High-performance in and out of water
  • Offers a more flattering, tailored fit
Cons
  • Not as stretchy as other options on this list

With large zip front and back pockets, Mack Weldon's board short lets you take everything you need to the pool or beach. In terms of performance, this option wicks away moisture like a champ and dries as faster than most other options on this list. We also love the various summer-friendly colorways, especially this orange gradient version that will make you stand out from the crowd.

During our testing, we realized this board short—made with 4% spandex—didn't offer as much mobility as those made with 10% spandex. On the bright side, the design is cut closer to the body, offering a more tailored fit that's super flattering. Plus, it's easy to sport whether you’re sunbathing on the beach or grabbing lunch on the resort.

Outerknown Apex Trunks by Kelly Slater

Apex Trunks by Kelly Slater
Pros
  • Weightless drainage, ventilation, quick-dry, four-way stretch in one
  • Chafe-less and can be packed into the back pocket
Cons
  • Expansive for a polyester boardshort

Tested by legendary surfing champion Kelly Slater on the waves—and by us in our fashion closet—this short is the ultimate option for athletes. The welded seams are lightweight but durable, and the stretchy polyester fabric allows for extra mobility.

In our testing, we simply can't get enough of how performance-heavy this board short is. It comes with more than 10% spandex, so our guys even wore them to jog or play volleyball. Other feats like weightless drainage, ventilation, and quick-dry which we've tested in the water really render these shorts a, well, champion. It's also completely chafe-free to boot.

Patagonia Wavefarer® Boardshorts

Wavefarer® Boardshorts
Pros
  • Durable water repellent (DWR) finish
  • Inseam prevent chafing
  • Can handle other activities outside of surfing
Cons
  • Not as stretchy as other shorts

Patagonia makes the best hybrid shorts on the market. Based on our testing, we found that the Wavefarer took us from one summer adventure to the next without having to change. While lesser board shorts we tried are just meant for the beach, we found this one is made for fishing, hiking and other walking-heavy adventures, too.

We especially like the DWR nylon fabric, which is water-repellent and breathable. We felt nice and fresh now matter how sweaty or wet we got. While there's no added spandex, the nylon fabric does feel inherently stretchy, and we were able to take big steps in them—easy peasy.

Best Athletic Board Shorts

Vuori Cruise Boardshort

Cruise Boardshort
Pros
  • Flexible for activities in and out of water
  • Top-tiered performance for stretch and drying
  • Made with anti-odor protection
Cons
  • No plus sizings

If you want a pair of board shorts that doubles as gym shorts, this Vuori number is up for the job. We tested its performance fabric and were impressed by its stretch, which has allowed us to easily do cardio as well as walking lunges during an intense leg day workout. Plus, its moisture-wicking and anti-odor technology keeps you looking (and smelling) fresh after running a few miles.

We love how this short is built for land and water. Our fashion editors have rocked it at the beach and the seaside bar, and it fits right in at both spots.

Most Stylish

Faherty Sunwashed Boardshort

Sunwashed Boardshort
Pros
  • Sleek design
  • Quick drying and durable
  • Easy to mix and match for casual fits
Cons
  • Expensive for a polyester short

When it comes to board shorts, Faherty is known for its eye-catching prints and patterns. Go with this version, showcasing a solid-striped contrast that looks cool, but not flashy. Apart from surfing, we found that it looks neat paired with a white t-shirt and sandals for a laid-back fit to wear on a boat ride or the boardwalk.

Our editors' favorite part about this short is the comfort of the performance. Its cotton blend feels nice and smooth, sure, but its quick drying and decent stretch ensure that it won't cling to your skin when you're wet.

Lululemon Current State Board Short 9"

Current State Board Short 9"

Pros
  • Lightweight feel
  • Abrasion-resistant
  • Length is ideal for taller gents
Cons
  • May be too long for shorter guys

Lululemon's Current State Board Short is a win for taller dudes with its 9-inch inseam, hitting that sweet spot for coverage and style. It also nails all the key points: sleek design, snug fit, resistant to abrasion, and water-repellent. Not to mention, the pair also has a flat, vented waistband that remains in place, whether you're conquering the ocean waves or taking a few laps around the pool.

We found that the fabric is lightweight and doesn't get sticky when drenched in the ocean. From a comfort perspective, the relaxing fit makes it a solid choice for guys with thicker thighs. Also, the nylon-elastane blend offers a great range of motion, so you can move your legs freely.

Best Everyday Short

Rhone 7" Point Break Board Short

7" Point Break Board Short
Pros
  • Incredible performance in and against water
  • Versatile and comfortable enough to wear as everyday shorts
Cons
  • Expensive for a polyester short

Believe it or not, our testing editors have worn these shorts to the gym, bar, or just to run errands, and no one has ever batted an eye on the fact that this short is actually meant for surfing and swimming. That's because its fitted-but-not-tight cut makes it universally flattering for everyday wear. Yeah, it's less baggy than other options, but we found that it's still roomy enough for just about any activity. Its UPF 40 fabric adds an extra layer of sun protection for your summer adventures.

Old Navy Novelty Board Shorts

Novelty Board Shorts
Now 57% Off
Pros
  • Super affordable
  • Available dozens of prints and regular—tall sizes
  • UV protection
Cons
  • Vibrant patterns might not be for everyone

You don't need to have to spend a fortune to secure a pair of supreme board shorts. Take this ombre option from Old Navy, which comes in over a dozen flattering prints, and is available in regular and tall sizes. It's also made with UV protection to block gnarly sun burns and built-in flex to offer plenty of comfort and mobility.

Despite its cheap price tag, the quality exceeded our expectations. We love how ultra-smooth the fabric felt after we put it on. It also dried relatively quickly. The stretch and adhesive fly are also very useful during a day of paddle boarding. However, what we love most about it is the fit: the 8-inch inseam dangles nicely above the knees, offering a neat look.

Best Long Short

Hurley One & Only Boardshort 22"

One & Only Boardshort 22"

Fans of long board shorts, look no further than Hurley’s signature One & Only shorts. With 22 inches in length, it gives you the coverage you love and need. If you've got thighs like a rugby player's, this short also come in extended sizing for big guys who are looking for a reliable swimsuit.

After trying it out in the water, we found that this short doesn't cling at all to the skin—or the "package", which is exactly what we're looking for. Although, we must note that this has no stretch since it's 100% polyester—a fact that we also tested to be true. So don't strain yourself too much wearing them.

What Is the Difference Between Swim Trunks and Board Shorts?

From fit, lining, waistband, fabric, and occasion, board shorts actually differ from swim trunks in many ways.

Length

The main difference here is the length. While swim trunks generally hit at the thigh, men's board shorts tend to be longer, usually ending right at the knee or slightly below it. This helps provide more coverage in general, and it protects you from the sun. Traditional board shorts tend to be baggier in shape and are known for being less restrictive—one of the many reasons they are recommended for highly intense activities, such as surfing, wakeboarding, and beach games

Lining

Swim trunks almost always have mesh linings to provide more support. Boards shorts, on the other hand, do not usually have linings; in fact, surfers and sailors avoid liners because that extra fabric can cause abrasion against the skin. Instead, board shorts offer a free, less restrictive fit that helps air circulate to keep you cool on those hot summer days, and give you more wiggle room and space for movement on the waves. Really, if you're performing heavy activities in water, no lining is the way to go.

Waistband

Board shorts have a very specific tighter, more durable waistband that opens up in the front and is secured by a Velcro or zip fly. It can be adjusted using a string tie, normally laced through grommets (aka those o-shaped metal hardware pieces) that help prevent them from falling down. However, swim trunks can come with a range of closures from button snaps and zip-flies to the most commonly used basic string tie at the front.
