By giving these fantastic characters someone new to talk to, something new to do, the show has found its latest, and one of its most successful, reinventions. Just in time to end, sure—but there is, in the end, something to be said for going out on top.
FXX’s Archer has remained one of the funniest shows on TV over the course of 14 seasons by never losing sight of its strengths even as it finds novel ways to change its characters and their mission. It’s as good as ever in its final season, bringing back vintage gags and delving into entirely new ways to make fun of both action flicks and workplace politics.

The first half of the season has breathed new life into the show and the new team dynamics have an appeal that would certainly outlast the final eight episodes.
We’re not investing in the stakes of the missions Archer and the team take on. We’re investing in all of the goofs, crass moments, and self-involved absurdities that come along with it. That’s what was funny in 2009, and it’s funny in 2023 as Archer prepares to shut it all down.
Whether it came to writing shocking jokes or trying to find fresh ways to reinvent itself, Archer was always dauntless. But its final season manages to straddle those lines in a fashion as proficient as its titular spy has always claimed to be. It’ll be tough to bid Archer adieu, but like he always said to his colleagues, there will never be another spy who can do quite what he does.
I’ve really enjoyed the archer franchise but like many others I don’t understand why they haven’t stopped making more seasons, as it’s overstayed its welcome and told all the stories it could tell before getting repetitive and comedically weaker. The Coma arc or Jessica Walters exit should have been the point where they finally stopped this show. What’s worse is that this season has for lack of better words gone full wok. I don’t like using that word since I feel it’s overused but boy is it obvious in this season. Archer get’s a younger black female partner who is shoe horned into the series and is constantly showing she’s better than him in every way. I know they’re trying to parody James Bond: no time to die, but the way she’s written is so obnoxious and they’ve written archer to be so much weaker than in past seasons to make her look better than him. There’s also no payoff for her inclusion in the series either as she’s just present through out it without any sort of reason for her being there.
There’s also a colonisation/return the artefacts episode where only one side of museums owning items is represented at all and there’s also a lot of snide commentary on a lot of things social justice warriors get all bent out of shape over such as the American tipping culture and why you should always tip. The first 4 episodes of this season are full of this stuff and are borderline unwatchable. It does get better at times especially towards the final episodes but it’s still completely tainted by this social commentary that it really should end now before it embarrasses itself any further.
