What this show does goes beyond George R.R. Martin’s brand of expert extrapolation and into loving parody. It’s a show that holds history away from itself and giggles.
In the same vein as Hulu’s “The Great,” the series is a rip-roaring and hilarious adventure full of magic, romance and bold female characters who take control of their legacies.

The trend for giving historical stories a modern twist continues with this series. Emily Bader plays the title character, Lady Jane Grey, who finds herself Queen of England after the death of her cousin King Edward VI. While some of the saga is truth-adjacent, other things are complete fantasy, esp. the fact that some of the characters are Ethians (humans who can take animal form). There's also a score with modern takes on classic pop hits, rollicking escapades, court intrigue and the pivotal romance (with dashing Edward Bluemel). The series has a spunky energy that keeps in entertaining, while the top-notch cast is great, whether playing good or evil. It's not as precious or over-the-top as Bridgerton, but the plucky attitude, wacky fantasy additions and enjoyable performances combine to create an enjoyable romp.

It’s fun for the sort of viewer who likes their historical fiction gilded with a bit of magic, and the instant chemistry between its two leads is enough to keep the attention of even those who might be skeptical of its fantastical parts. For those weary of 1:1 history shows, My Lady Jane invites you to expect the unexpected.

My Lady Jane fully embraces the heart and the message of the story it is trying to tell, with comedy and romance woven in masterfully.
Is it better than “Bridgerton”? Oh no, dearest readers. But it’s still a lot of kooky fun.
Sexy, sweary and infantile, this is one for your (inner) teen.
From those swear-filled opening moments onward, My Lady Jane wants you to know how hip and different it is. It’s just a shame that, in a crowded market of dramas like these, this desperate proclamation of individuality makes it more of the same.
"My Lady Jane" (S01, 10 eps, 1/2 hr, Amzn) It's clear in the first episode that this is a romcom by girls and for girls. This is creator/writer Gemma Burgess' very first presentation and that's pretty much followed through with the cast, too, in that you've not seen them before - yes, they have credits but they've been in the background. Also 90% of the actors are in their 20s, so that's a bit weird for their characterizations but it definitely signals the target demographic. Look, it's cute with some interesting humor but there's a shallowness to the characters and the production itself. IOW, I think it's satisfied to attract its limited demographic which'll limit its wider success. Our protagonist is the title character and she's just a hotbed of feminist ideals, so again, targeted to a certain demo but won't get it to that wider mainstream.

I found this show boring and silly. Think pride prejudice and zombies level of silly but just replace the zombies with animals...
The controversy around King Edwards is also well deserved, as the decision to race swap him doesn't really add anything to the show. If it pulls you out of the emersion of the show for no reason at all then it was a bad decision.
