Yes, it's tough to trace the relationships between various ranks within the police department and the city and state governments, but that doesn't mean this is an incredibly serious drama it takes a degree in literature to understand. "The Wire" is funny and odd and sad and, above all, engrossing.

The breadth and ambition of "The Wire" are unrivaled and that taken cumulatively over the course of a season -- any season -- it's an astonishing display of writing, acting and storytelling that must be considered alongside the best literature and filmmaking in the modern era.
Despite high praise, there are two serious problems: (a) The first new episode is crazy confusing, and (b) over the course of the first batch of episodes, the story lines don't develop quickly enough.
The Wire's universality is quite incredible. many themes are commented in forth season, maybe the most complete and best season (along with third's, but i vote 4th for having the best opening theme's version of full show). The characters and story's naturalness are very admirable too.
In the history of television, there has never been a single season more captivating than the fourth season of The Wire. David Simon created a dark world where no one was safe, and as this season depressingly proves, not even the kids. We enter the series with four kids as our representatives for this cold world, and only one of them truly escapes "The Game". The Wire is a 21st Century Shakespearean tragedy. No other show has come close to this. The Wire paints a bleak picture of humanity and all its grave inhumanity. The American Dream has never felt so frail.
Amazing. This show continues to reinvent itself. By season 4 you are not stick in the same "formula" as every dam tv show is. It advances. It shows new things. Now you see the lives of 4 kids that are affected by the world the first 3 seasons show us. How can a TV show be this great when they bench the principal actor (McNolty) and (SPOILER) killed the other one last season. The only frustration this show gives me is that almost no one has seen it! Why?
In my opinion, it's the greatest TV Show ever made. An epic tapestry of the city of Baltimore. Novelistic in its approach to storytelling it pushed the boundaries for what TV could be. Not only was there great writing and directing but the show also dealt with greater social issues. A must watch for everyone.
