Michigan health officials announced 218 new confirmed cases of coronavirus and 26 more deaths on Thursday, June 11.

The update snapped a four-day streak of fewer than 200 daily new cases being reported by the Department of Health and Human Services.

In total, the state has reported 59,496 known cases of COVID-19 and 5,737 deaths linked to the infectious respiratory virus at the center of the global pandemic.

Michigan -- the 10th most populous state -- ranks ninth in the nation in confirmed cases and sixth in deaths. It continues to see declines in both categories, which has allowed the state to slide down the list, while states like Texas and Florida are seeing increases in cases over the last two weeks.

The seven-day moving averages are 179 new cases and 20 new deaths per day. That’s a decline from the 318 new cases and 32 new deaths per day from a week prior.

Fifty-seven of Michigan’s 83 counties did not report a single new confirmed case Wednesday. Wayne County had the most new additions with 49 cases, followed by Kent County (27), Ingham County (21), Oakland County (15) and Bay County (12).

Wayne County alone, which is home to the city of Detroit, accounts for 35 percent of the state’s confirmed cases of coronavirus, and 44 percent of the coronavirus-linked deaths.

Here’s a look at the Michigan counties with the most confirmed cases. While not in order, the counties listed below are also the 10 most-populous counties in the state.

1. Wayne County: 20,914 cases (2,543 deaths)

2. Oakland County: 8,518 cases (1020 deaths)

3. Macomb County: 6,847 cases (842 deaths)

4. Kent County: 4,029 cases (111 deaths)

5. Genesee County: 2,077 cases (258 deaths)

6. Washtenaw County: 1,366 cases (101 deaths)

7. Saginaw County: 1,117 cases (114 deaths)

8. Kalamazoo County: 885 cases (62 deaths)

9. Ottawa County: 840 cases (44 deaths)

10. Ingham County: 793 cases (29 deaths)

Michigan processed 15,163 diagnostic tests for coronavirus on Wednesday, June 10. Of those tests, 2.55 percent came back positive for COVID-19 statewide.

In prisons, almost 10.4 percent of the more than 500 diagnostic tests conducted Wednesday came back positive.

Dozens of the 250 testing locations statewide offer free testing, and individuals seeking a test no longer need a doctor’s note to get one.

PREVENTION TIPS

In addition to washing hands regularly and not touching your face, officials recommend practicing social distancing, assuming anyone may be carrying the virus.

Health officials say you should be staying at least 6 feet away from others and working from home, if possible.

Use disinfecting wipes or disinfecting spray cleaners on frequently-touched surfaces in your home (door handles, faucets, countertops) and carry hand sanitizer with you when you go into places like stores.

Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer has also issued an executive order requiring people to wear face coverings over their mouth and nose while inside enclosed, public spaces.
