PETERSBURG, Va. (WWBT) - Crews have repaired a water line break in Petersburg and lifted the boil water advisory on Thursday.

“Water flowing from the line break that happened in Petersburg on Sunday has been stopped, and all water tanks in the City should be full by Tuesday at noon,” the city said Monday night. “A new valve was installed today, and line replacements will continue tomorrow. Some Petersburg residents may experience low pressure until all tanks are full.”

A boil water notice was issued until Thursday afternoon following water testing.

Petersburg City Government offices resumed normal operations on Tuesday.

People living in the city are now asked to conserve water until the repairs are complete.

ORIGINAL STORY:

Crews are working to repair a significant water line break at 800 Arlington Street in Petersburg after it broke early afternoon on Sunday, July 7.

City leaders blame a “large truck” that was parked on top the line, explaining that the weight and pressure of 6 feet of dirt and that truck forced the water main to break.

Some people in the Arlington Street area do not have water at all, while others in the city experience low pressure.

“I called it in actually and my water has gone from slow to none and since then we just have to wait to see when they get the pressure back and the water back,” said Michael Parham, a man who lives near the water main break.

Petersburg residents are now asked to conserve water until the repairs are complete. All residents are now advised to boil any tap water they use for drinking or cooking.

Once fixed, a sample of the water must be sent to the lab for testing. If the sample is approved, then a second sample must be taken and sent to the lab. This is a 48-hour process, so most likely residents and businesses will need to boil water at least through Thursday morning at the earliest, according to city officials.

“You wouldn’t be able to do the necessities like flushing your toilet is main important. That’s number 1, to be able to flush the waste away in this kind of heat. Come on now,” said another resident Sam Ferman.

Petersburg Public Works crews and contractors will remain in the area, working to repair the 12-inch line.

Water to this line comes directly from the city’s main water supply line. Public works crews are rerouting water supply feeds so that most of the city’s water tanks can remain full.

The issue closed the Circuit Court and the City of Petersburg Clerk’s office on Monday.
