Some exes get their driver's licenses and write sappy ballads; some are out for blood and strike the first punch. The Cobra Kai Love Quad, which consists of Miguel Diaz (Xolo Maridueña), Samantha LaRusso (Mary Mouser), Robby Keene (Tanner Buchanan) and Tory Nichols (Peyton List), have had their fair share of broken hearts — and bones. Throughout the show’s first three seasons, we see their relationships and loyalties evolve, but it can be hard to keep their statuses straight, as it is with most high school romances. Before starting the upcoming fourth season, you might need a refresher on who’s dating whom and who’s drawing enemy lines. Buckle up, because we love drama.
SEASON 1
Miguel and Sam Two households both alike in dignity, in fair Los Angeles, where we lay our scene. Sam meets underdog Miguel, and it doesn’t take a scientist to know there’s chemistry. The catch? Miguel’s Cobra Kai sensei, Johnny Lawrence (William Zabka), is a longtime rival of Sam’s dad, Daniel LaRusso (Ralph Macchio). Unaware of this feud between two grown men who clearly have never gone to therapy, the teens begin dating.
Sam and Robby Daniel takes Johnny’s estranged and troubled son, Robby, under his wing at LaRusso Auto Group and his Miyagi-Do dojo. While learning karate at the LaRusso residence, Robby and Sam quickly strike up a friendship.
Miguel vs. Robby As Miguel trains at Cobra Kai, Sam notices changes in her boyfriend. He’s confident but aggressive, strong but violent. One evening, Sam and Robby attend a beach party together as friends. In a jealous and drunk rage, Miguel pushes Robby but accidentally hits Sam, causing her to break things off.
SEASON 2
Sam and Robby Sam and Robby’s training at Miyagi-Do teaches them to be in sync with one another, and this brings the pair even closer. Soon enough, the karate counterparts realize that they may be more than just fighting partners. They kiss (shocker).
Miguel and Tory Meanwhile, Miguel tries to move on from Sam and starts dating Cobra Kai newcomer Tory. She’s a skilled fighter with a mysterious side to her — and he’s intrigued. Tory helps Miguel overcome his previous relationship, and he encourages her to let her walls down.
Miguel and Sam… again? As both couples bask in their honeymoon phases, there’s another high school party with alcohol involved. Where are the parents in this town? Sam drunkenly kisses Miguel as Tory witnesses from afar. The drama.
Tory vs. Sam vs. Robby vs. Miguel (Oh, boy) One day at school, Tory hijacks the intercom. “I’m coming for you, bitch,” she says to Sam. (You know some poor school secretary is about to lose her job.) During their face-off, Tory accuses Sam of kissing Miguel at the party. Robby hears all of this for the first time. Hell breaks loose in the hallways, but the chaos ends when Robby kicks Miguel off a balcony and leaves him in a coma. Just a normal day at school, right? (Seriously though, that’s a lawsuit waiting to happen.) SEASON 3
Sam and Robby Robby’s on the run after the tragic school fight, and Sam is consumed with guilt, thinking it’s all her fault. After Robby’s arrested and put in jail, he’s unable to return Sam’s emails. (Apparently, prison doesn’t care about your love problems.) From his cell, he watches a news interview with Sam, who’s helping with a fundraiser to pay for Miguel’s hospital bills. As if the drunken kiss wasn’t already salt in the wound, Robby feels even more betrayed by his ex. The power couple is officially Miyagi-Do-ver. Tory vs. Sam While Miguel’s in a coma, Sam’s still traumatized by the school fight. Tory shows no mercy, however, and continues to terrorize her nemesis. Cobra Kai gangs up on Miyagi-Do at a carnival one night, and Sam watches in horror as Hawk breaks Demetri’s arm.
Miguel and Sam Miguel finally wakes up from his coma. He comes to terms with the dark side of Cobra Kai and no longer wants to be associated with it. Sam and Miguel reconcile and acknowledge that they never really moved on from each other.
Tory and Robby One of the greatest prophets of our time once said, “You’re probably with that blond girl who always made me doubt.” And she was right. Robby is out of jail and turns to Cobra Kai. He knows he can’t trust anyone in Miyagi-Do, especially Sam. Having been wronged by the same person, Tory befriends Robby.
But what’s the Love Quad really like in real life? Young love… who knew it was so painful? Rest assured, the Love Quad leaves all the fighting for the cameras. Even though Sam and Tory are enemies, the two actors cannot be more different off screen. “I started to like Mary, and it was horrible. And I couldn’t act anymore,” List joked in a 2020 interview with Collider. “I understand why some actors don’t interact with people they’re supposed to hate… I get that, but Mary and I became friends.” As for Buchanan, being real-life friends with his co-stars has actually made shooting certain scenes awkward. He told Interview in 2020, “When we [Buchanan and Mouser] had our first kiss scene in season two, they were asking us, ‘Are you ready?’ My heart was pounding, I was shaking. It just feels weird to go to that place, because we’re such good friends.” According to Mouser’s Instagram, the two besties even dressed up as Star Wars characters this past Halloween.
Maridueña summed up the cast chemistry best in a conversation earlier this year with Looper. “Everyone on that show is so easygoing. From the first second you meet them, it feels like a family and I think that's something I definitely take for granted because not every set is like that.”
What will happen with Sam and Miguel back together, and Robby and Tory forming an alliance? Well, if we’ve learned anything in the first three seasons, it’s that you never really know what to expect from these four. But let’s maybe stick to breaking hearts, not bones.
