Spoilers for The Sandman ahead!
The Sandman introduces us to a whole new world of dreams and nightmares, but it also finds time for a cuddly companion. Gregory the gargoyle is one of the show’s early breakout stars, but unfortunately he’s not long for this world. A weakened Dream (Tom Sturridge) has to absorb the creature’s life force in order to summon Hecate. Gregory sacrifices himself with grace and dignity, but that hasn’t stopped fans (and The Sandman creator Neil Gaiman himself) from demanding #GargoyleRights.
Fans aren’t the only ones emotional over the tragic goodbye; the scene also affected the actors on set. “They made a beautiful head, and there was a puppeteer holding it, which was really important to me. It’s an emotional scene, and to put it simply, you just needed a face to connect with,” Sturridge told GamesRadar. “It was an exquisite piece of construction.”
For more Gregory, fans can turn to the original comics by Gaiman, where his fate is quite different. And of course, there’s always Irving (aka Goldie), the adorable baby gargoyle who enters the show after Gregory’s exit. Gregory could never be replaced, but this little guy will do.
The Sandman is streaming on Netflix now.
