The biggest night in Volusia-Flagler High School Sports revisited: The full list of Award winners
The Volusia-Flagler Area High School Sports Awards Show was held on Monday night at the Ocean Center in Daytona Beach with some of the best athletes in the area being honored.
Awards for most FHSAA-sanctioned sports were given out as were premier awards for coaches of the year, athletes of the year and teams of the year.
Orlando Magic basketball player Anthony Black made an appearance as well. A courage award was also handed out to University High School track athlete Nyrania Barr-Miller.

Kayne Finley Courage Award
Nyrania Barr-Miller, University, sr.: Barr-Miller departs University as the school's all-time female record-holder in nearly a half-dozen track and field events. The senior has been hearing-impaired since the age of 2, but can faintly distinguish the sound of gunfire from the starter's line through hearing aids. At the FHSAA's Class 4A state championships, Barr-Miller ran a personal-best time of 14.73 seconds to place ninth. A Magna Cum Laude graduate, Barr-Miller will attend St. Thomas University in Miami Gardens this fall on a track and field scholarship.
Girls athlete of the year
Mackenzie Roy, Spruce Creek, jr.: The junior earned All-Area recognition in three sports during the 2023-24 school year: cross country, soccer and track and field. Roy placed fourth in Class 4A in cross country, and posted a top time of 18:05.5. She scored six goals and added two assists from midfield for Spruce Creek's girls soccer team. She closed the year with a pair of second-place finishes at the Class 4A track and field finals, in the 1,600- and 3,200-meter events.
Boys athlete of the year
Jordan Mills, Matanzas, sr.: Mills was a three-sport star as a senior at Matanzas. In the fall, he served as the Pirates’ second-leading tackler with 69 solo stops as a defensive back. He also shared the team lead with two interceptions and forced two fumbles. During the winter, Mills assembled a perfect wrestling season, going 52-0 and claiming the Class 2A state championship at 190 pounds. He won the final match in the second extra period after dislocating his shoulder earlier in the bout. This spring, he was a regional track qualifier and the area’s top 400-meter hurdler. Mills made the All-Area first teams in football and wrestling and added second-team recognition in track and field.
Girls team of the year
Mainland girls basketball: The Buccaneers raced to titles in the Five Star Conference, District 4-5A and Region 1-5A before placing as the state runner-up. They ended the season with an 18-13 record. Fresh off the first FHSAA championship in program history in 2023, Mainland challenged itself even more in 2024, charging through the fourth-toughest schedule in the state. It played only four local games but won them all by an average margin of 29 points. Three Bucs made the All-Area first team, and another made the second team.
Boys team of the year
Mainland football: With a last-second field goal by senior Jacob Gettman, the Buccaneers defeated St. Augustine 21-19 to capture the FHSAA Class 3S football championship – the program's first state title in 20 years. Mainland went 14-1 this past fall; its offense averaged 34.5 points per game, and its defense allowed 12.6 per game. Eight seniors have since signed Division I letters of intent, including All-American defenders LJ McCray (Florida) and Zavier Mincey (Alabama).
Girls coach of the year
Tim McCrae, New Smyrna Beach weightlifting: A two-time competitor at the Summer Olympics for Team USA, McRae guided New Smyrna Beach to a second-place finish in Olympic and traditional scoring at the FHSAA Class 2A girls weightlifting championships. The 'Cudas had three double gold medalists – senior Mopelola Tofade and juniors Asha-Mahri Manzueta and Olivia Bond-West. Additionally, New Smyrna Beach's boys placed second in Class 2A traditional with another pair of champions, senior Ryan Geary and junior Isaiah McCloud.
Boys coach of the year
Travis Roland, Mainland football: A captain on the first Volusia County high school football team to win a state championship in 2003, Roland coached his alma mater to the area's second title last December, almost 20 years to the day later. His Mainland Buccaneers completed a 14-1 season by beating St. Augustine 21-19 in the Class 3S finals. They avenged their 2022 loss in the state finale with a walk-off field goal by Jacob Gettman. For the first time in his coaching career, Roland focused most of his attention on the offensive side of the ball after his previous offensive coordinator left for a college job during the offseason. The unit averaged 34.5 points per game in 2023. Mainland’s defense allowed only 12.6 per game and featured two All-Americans.
Boys bowling
Brayden Barnes, Seabreeze, so.: A Seabreeze sophomore was the lone Volusia-Flagler boys bowler to crack the top 16 at states. Barnes maintained a 213.9 average, rolled a perfect 300 game and knocked down a team-high 4,492 pins for the district runner-up Sandcrabs.
Girls bowling
Emma Pezzullo, Flagler Palm Coast, sr.: Pezzullo rolled her first career 300 in a high school match in October. She also led the Volusia-Flagler area in total pins with 6,717 and scoring aveerage at 223.9. She captured the individual District 3 championship to secure a spot at states.
Boys cross country
Braedyn Wormeck, Flagler Palm Coast, jr.: The junior heated up in the final four races, comfortably winning the Five Star Conference title, placing in the top 10 in districts and regionals (15:46.9 PR), concluding with an 11th-place run in the Class 4A state meet.
Girls cross country
Mackenzie Roy, Spruce Creek, jr.: Roy clocked a personal-best time of 18:05.5 to win the District 2-4A meet, her last of eight race victories in the fall. She won the Five Star meet as well and finished second in her region and fourth in her class.
Football (defense)
LJ McCray, Mainland, sr.: McCray was one of the nation's top-ranked defensive recruits last year. The Florida signee turned in one of the most dominant seasons in Volusia-Flagler history as the 6-foot-6, 270-pound lineman recorded 37 tackles for loss, 13 sacks and three forced fumbles.
Football (offense)
Javon Ross, DeLand, sr.: An all-purpose athlete, Ross was selected as an All-Area player for the third time. The electric senior burned defenses from the slot, backfield and as a kick returner, totaling 2,387 all-purpose yards (1,022 rushing, 892 receiving), 32 total touchdowns and he tied for the area lead with six interceptions on defense.
Boys golf
Gabriel Hull, Spruce Creek, jr.: Hull claimed the Five Star Conference title in the regular season and also won districts with a 2-under-par 69. He tied for ninth at regionals (2-over 73) and finished 19th in the Class 3A state tournament, the best placement by a Volusia-Flagler golfer this season.
Girls golf
Alexandra Gazzoli, Matanzas, sr.: Gazzoli completed her high school career in the same way she ended her first three years, placing in the top four at the Class 2A state tournament. She tied for fourth with a two-day total of 1-over-par, 143. She finished second at districts and regionals and will continue her career at Florida State.
Boys swimming
Cole Conlan, Seabreeze, jr.: Conlan put forth the area's best times in the 100y butterfly and 200y freestyle, falling less than 0.2 seconds off the top spot in the 100y backstroke. At the 2A state meet, he placed second in the 100y butterfly (50.14 seconds), an event he won at regionals, and fourth in the 100y backstroke. He also posted a fifth-place finish in the 200y medley relay and a sixth-place finish in the 200y freestyle relay.
Girls swimming
Alexis O'Keefe, Seabreeze, fr.: O'Keefe positioned herself as one of the area's best distance swimmers. She was the Class 2A state runner-up in the 200y freestyle (1:53.66) and came in fifth in the 500y freestyle (5:08.88). She won both events at districts and regionals and also assisted the Seabreeze 200y freestyle relay team to a fourth-place finish.
Volleyball
Emma Van Deusen, DeLand, sr.: Van Deusen rattled of 205 kills to lead the Bulldogs to their fourth district championship in a row and a regional quarterfinals appearance. She also recorded 184 serve receptions and 138 digs.
Girls basketball
Anovia Sheals, Mainland, sr.: Sheals continued her dominance as a senior for state runner-up Mainland, averaging a double-double while pushing the Bucs to the state title game. She averaged 18.9 points and 11.3 rebounds per game.
Boys basketball
Nathan Kirk, Mainland, so.: Kirk followed his standout freshman campaign with 17.3 points, 5 rebounds, 3 assists and 1.8 steals per game. He led the state semifinalist Bucs in scoring during each round of the playoffs.
Girls soccer
Kylie Watson, Seabreeze, sr.: Watson covered hard yards, won the ball back and drove the District 5-5A Sandcrabs forward from midfield, generating nine goals and six assists. Watson iced the Five Star final and scored twice in a playoff win over Wesley Chapel.
Boys soccer
Weston Desoto, New Smyrna Beach, sr.: Desoto returned from an ankle fracture and finished the year as the area's top scorer with 29 goals and 10 assists. Desoto tallied game-winners in the Five Star final, the District 5-6-A championship and the Region 2-6-A quarterfinal.
Girls weightlifting
Olivia Bond-West, New Smyrna Beach, so.: Bond-West crushed the Class 2A competition at 183 pounds, breaking an FHSAA clean and jerk record with a 260-pound lift. She posted identical 460-pound totals in Olympic and traditional scoring to secure a pair of individual golds.
Girls wrestling
Christina Borgmann, Flagler Palm Coast, jr.: Borgmann pushed through her season unblemished in the 125-pound weight class, capturing regional and state championships with a 25-0 record. She was one of two Flagler Palm Coast state champs and one of three from the Volusia-Flagler area.
Boys wrestling
Jordan Mills, Matanzas, sr.: Mills was perfect at 190 pounds, picking up district, regional and Class 2A state championships on his way to an unbeaten record of 52-0.
Baseball
Garrett Grant, Spruce Creek, jr.: Grant, a Florida Atlantic commit, led the area in wins (eight), innings pitched (67) and strikeouts (73). The right-hander posted a 0.73 ERA.
Beach volleyball
Gabrielle Bissell jr./Brianna Luoma sr., New Smyrna Beach: During their first year as New Smyrna Beach partners, Bissell and Luoma did not face any growing pains for the state-qualifying Barracudas. They rattled off a 19-0 record at Line 1. Luoma, a senior, finished her high school career 69-0.
Flag football
Emma Corr, New Smyrna Beach, jr.: Corr, New Smyrna Beach's dual-threat quarterback, had the same number of passing and rushing yards (1,528) and contributed 15 touchdowns to help the Barracudas go three rounds deep in the FHSAA playoffs.
Softball
Julie Kelley, Spruce Creek, sr.: Kelley, a Kentucky commit, posted a 14-2 record with a 0.48 ERA, 193 strikeouts and 24 walks in 116⅓ innings. She added a .431 average, three home runs, 17 RBIs and a team-high 12 doubles at the plate. Kelley finished a four-year career with 815 strikeouts.
Boys tennis
Zane Ensminger, Spruce Creek, jr.: After winning the 2023 area player of the year award, Ensminger claimed the Five Star Conference and District 2-4-A titles in No. 1 singles and No. 1 doubles. He advanced to the semifinals of the individual singles draw and quarterfinals of the individual doubles draw at the state tournament, finishing 15-3 in singles and 16-2 in doubles.
Girls tennis
Giselle Adekunle, Spruce Creek, so.: During Adekunle's first year of No. 1 singles and doubles she charged to the individual draws of the 4A state tournament in each. She ended up in the singles semifinals and doubles finals. Adekunle racked up records of 16-5 in singles and 16-6 in doubles, and grabbed Five Star Conference and district championships.
Boys track and field
Preston Kuznof, Atlantic, sr.: Kuznof, a TCU commit, opened the season with the fourth-longest javelin throw in the nation at 65.51 and finished it by breaking the FHSAA's state championship meet record at 64.36. Kuznof completed an undefeated season in the event, winning at all nine meets he attended since February 23.
Girls track and field
Kylie Neira, DeLand, jr.: Neira defended her Class 4A pole vaulting crown, hitting four of her first five jumps with a top mark of 3.9 meters. Neira took gold at all but one meet this spring, including titles at the Florida Relays, the Five Star Conference championship and her district and regional competitions.
Boys weightlifting
Ryan Geary, New Smyrna Beach, sr.: Gear captured his third consecutive traditional championship, hitting his first bench press attempt at 345 pounds and clinching a winning score of 620 — the top pound-for-pound mark in Class 2A.
