Keeping Sports Clean

Attorney Travis Tygart has been labeled a knight in shining armor. As the longtime head of the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency (USADA), Tygart has taken on high profile doping cases, from cyclist Lance Armstrong to track champions Marion Jones and Justin Gatlin, who were stripped of their Olympic medals. Tygart says most athletes don't set out to cheat, but they're put in a culture where they feel it's the only way to win. The challenge is for all athletes to compete safely and fairly, says Tygart. A Fire in His Eyes

Growing up in Florida, Brad Snyder spent most of his childhood in a pool or at the beach. At the Naval Academy, he was captain of the swim team. In 2011 while serving in Afghanistan, Snyder lost his vision after a 40-pound improvised explosive device exploded in his face. Remarkably, a year later, Snyder was back in the pool, this time at the Paralympics in London where he won two gold medals and one silver in swimming. In 2020 at the Tokyo Paralympics, Snyder again scored gold, this time in the triathlon. Outside of his athletic career, Snyder is a PhD candidate at Princeton and the author of the memoir Fire in My Eyes. The Bounce is produced by Jill Yesko and distributed by Your Public Studios. She Stood Out Too Much

Wendy Hilliard was told she "stood out too much" — code for the racism she experienced during her storied athletic career that culminated in her introduction into the USA Gymnastics Hall of Fame. Wendy was the first African American rhythmic gymnast to compete as a member of the U.S. national team and represented the US at three world championships and the 1984 Olympic Trials. In 1996 Wendy started the Wendy Hilliard Foundation to empower young people from underserved communities through gymnastics. To date, the Wendy Hilliard Foundation has provided free and low-cost gymnastics to more than 25,000 aspiring gymnasts...one or more you will no doubt see in future Olympics. From Gym Suits to Sports Bras

There's a double standard when it comes to what men and women wear in sports. While men's uniforms are built for function, women's athletic clothing is often made to show off their bodies rather than support their athletic endeavors. From women beach volleyball players who are mandated to wear bikinis, to women ski jumpers forced to pad the hips of their uniforms to appear more feminine, why can't we stop obsessing about what women athletes wear? This episode, host Jill Yesko talks with journalist and University of Texas professor Mary Bock. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Strength

What's it like when you are the strongest woman in the room and everyone notices? We'll talk about weight and strength from two very different women athletes. One was born with incredible strength. The other gained her strength super powers by accident. This episode, we hear from: Cheryl Haworth, former Olympic super heavy weight weightlifting bronze medalist and weightlifting coach. Mara Neimanis, aerial performance artist. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

I Hate the Olympics

More and more athletes are speaking out about what is wrong with the Olympics and why they are choosing to just say no to participating in what they say is a sports boondoggle that favors sponsors over athletes. Add in record low ratings and political scandals that some say make the Olympics irrelevant. Can the Olympics survive? And if so, what needs to be done to reform the Games? This episode, we hear from Carrie Sheinberg, former Olympic alpine skier and journalist. The Bounce is produced by Jill Yesko and distributed by Your Public Studios.
