UPDATED:

Stop & Shop is closing seven of its underperforming New York stores, including its Coney Island operation in Brooklyn.

The closures will take place before Nov. 2 and include grocers in Greenvale, Hempstead, East Meadow and Coram on Long Island; Mt. Vernon, north of the Bronx; and West Haverstraw, in Rockland County.

In total, 32 Stop & Shop locations will be shuttered throughout New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, Massachusetts and Rhode Island, according to a Friday press release.

Shop & Shop President Gordon Reid claims the closures are a result of what’s working for the company as much as what’s not.

“Since 2018, we have completed more than 190 store remodels, with the customer shopping experience in mind,” Reid said. “These stores are outperforming other Stop & Shop stores that haven’t been remodeled.”

Reid said in May that executives were reviewing Stop & Shop’s overall store portfolio and planned to eliminate weaker operations in order to “create a healthy base for the future growth of our brand.”

The supermarket chain said it will continue to operate 350 stores in the five states impacted by the shuttering of the locations listed Friday. That includes 91 stores throughout New York.

Its Downtown Brooklyn and Sheepshead Bay stores were not among those targeted for closure in Brooklyn.

Stop & Shop’s site still lists five stores in the Bronx and five on Staten Island among its New York City shops.

According to its announcement Friday, workers impacted by upcoming store closures “will be offered other opportunities within the company.” Stop & Shop employs 58,000 people.

Reid added that the company will also “communicate specific store closing dates to local customers well in advance of any store closures” and plans to continue offering online shopping and home delivery services.
