Jose Miranda Ties MLB Consecutive Hits Record, Misses Out On Breaking It

Minnesota Twins infielder Jose Miranda had a brush with Major League Baseball history on Saturday afternoon against the Houston Astros

Miranda, who's having an outstanding season for the Twins, has been on a nearly unbelievable run of form over his past few games. On the July 4th game against the Detroit Tigers, Miranda went 5 for 5 with three doubles. He followed that with another 4 for 4 performance with a double in Friday night's game.

And then he added two more hits in his first two official at bats in Saturday's game. An RBI single in the second inning made it 11 consecutive hits.

That was followed by another single in the fourth inning, tying the Major League record with hits in 12 consecutive at-bats.

In the bottom of the sixth inning, Miranda came up with two outs and an opportunity to set a new record with a 13th consecutive hit. But Astros pitcher Hunter Brown got him to fly out to routine center field to end the streak.

Minnesota Twins Ride Jose Miranda Streak To Offensive Explosion

Miranda's 12 for 12 streak underlines just how good the Twins offense has been in recent weeks. In just the past three games, Minnesota's scored 33 runs, though the pitching faltered in a 13-12 loss to the Astros on Friday night.

Suddenly, the Twins offense looks like one of the best in baseball, as Carlos Correa's resurgent season and the return of Royce Lewis have powered the team to a 17-13 stretch over their last 30. And a 13-7 record over their last 20 games.

Miranda's impressive showing pushed his batting line up to .328/.370/.531, good for a 154 weighted runs created plus; 54% better than the league average. After a mostly lost 2023, Miranda's added over two wins above replacement for the Twins through early-July. And it's helping them hang around in a suddenly competitive American League Central division.

Despite the Cleveland Guardians outstanding start and the resurgent Kansas City Royals, the Twins sit just 5.5 games back of first place and squarely in position to secure one of the three wild card spots. Now Miranda just has to start another attempt at 13 for 13.
