Embracing arms with a pride rainbow Relationships are at the center of our lives, and they can be both elating and challenging. Dr. Nadeau frequently works with folks whose relationships understandably need support to thrive. Some common reasons why clients seek relationship therapy include:

  • Communication struggles: Communication is a crucial aspect of any relationship. When communication breaks down, misunderstandings and conflicts flare.
  • Challenges in sex: Concerns like varying sex drives, performance anxiety, and dissatisfaction with the amount of intimacy in your relationship can all cause tension (and not the good kind). We enjoy working on sex-related concerns with relationships of all genders.
  • Different values and goals: Conflict often comes up when couples have different values or goals, and unchecked, this can lead to long-term dissatisfaction in the relationship.
  • Parenting disagreements: Raising children can be challenging, and couples often have different ideas on how to approach it.

Relationship therapy can help all people in connection to address their issues and strengthen their relationships. Therapy provides a safe and neutral space for couples to discuss their problems, understand each other’s perspectives, and learn new skills to improve their communication and connection.

At Panorama Therapy, we offer a range of research-backed and culturally affirming approaches to suit the specific needs of your relationships. Some of the approaches we use include:

  • Emotionally Focused Therapy for Couples: This approach focuses on identifying and reshaping the negative patterns of interaction that lead to relationship problems. It helps couples understand their emotions and teaches them how to communicate their needs and feelings more effectively.
  • Experiential Approaches to Couples Therapy: These strategies involve experiential exercises that help couples increase emotional intimacy and deepen their connection. Couples can expect to learn and practice new ways to communicate, problem-solve, and express their emotions in a safe and supportive environment.

Men hugging intimately FAQ

  1. What can I expect in a typical relationship therapy session?
During a typical relationship therapy session, you and your relationship partner(s) will meet with a licensed therapist to discuss your concerns. Your psychologist will use engaging questions, practical exercises, and new insights to help you communicate effectively, understand each other’s perspectives, and work towards your goals.
  2. How long does couples therapy usually take?
The length of relationship therapy varies depending on the complexity of the issues and the goals of the clients. Some couples may see significant improvement in just a few sessions, while others may require ongoing therapy for several months. We recommend at least 6-8 sessions for premarital therapy.
  3. What should I do if my partner is hesitant about attending therapy?
If your partner is hesitant about attending therapy, try to explore their concerns with them from a place of curiosity and care. It may also be helpful to suggest a trial period of a few sessions to see if therapy is a good fit for all. Relationship therapy works best when all are invested in the process.
  4. Can relationship therapy work if only one partner attends?
Relationship therapy can still be effective if only one partner attends, as they can work with the therapist to identify and change their own behaviors and attitudes that may be contributing to relationship problems. Some changes may not be possible without collaboration from all.
  5. How much does relationship therapy cost?
The cost of relationship therapy varies depending on the length of sessions. Sessions are prorated based on a rate of $220/50 minutes. 50 minutes is a standard, minimum session length when more than one client is in the room.
Please email our office to obtain information about billing options for couples. Not all insurance plans cover relationship therapy. We are in-network for some Blue Cross and Blue Shield PPO insurance plans. If you have an alternate insurance provider and want to utilize your out-of-network benefits, we can provide you with SuperBill invoices to submit to your insurance for reimbursement.
  6. What if I am uncomfortable sharing personal information in front of my partner?
If you are uncomfortable sharing personal information in front of your partner, let your therapist know. They can work with you to create a safe and comfortable space to share your thoughts and feelings.
  7. Will my therapist take sides in our relationship conflicts?
No, a therapist should never take sides in a relationship conflict. The therapist’s role is to remain neutral and help each partner communicate effectively and find common ground. In relationship therapy, the client is the relationship itself—not any of the partners in particular.
