When you turn 1, you get a family unit to live with and a name, at four, you get a buttoned up jacket, that buttons in back, at 7 you get a new jacket that buttons in the front, at 8 you begin volunteer hours, at 9 you get a bicycle, which helps enhance your freedom, at 10 you get a hair cut which will show your maturity as a respected adult, and by 12 you get your assignment, which is basically your job for the rest of your life.

At the start of the story Jonas is given the highly honored Assignment of Receiver of Memory at the Ceremony of Twelve. The Receiver is the sole keeper of the community’s collective memory. He receives these memories from the previous person now called the Giver. When the memories are transmitted so are all the emotions that go with it. This is a joyous and painful part of his job.
