Inside No. 9 season 9 release date

Inside No. 9 premieres on BBC Two and iPlayer at 10pm on Wednesday 8th May 2024.

As usual, the series will follow a weekly release pattern, culminating in the grand finale on Wednesday 12th June.

But if you're eager for more Inside No. 9 beyond that point, then don't fear: Steve Pemberton and Reece Shearsmith will be reuniting for the long-teased stage show based on the anthology early next year.

Is Inside No. 9 ending with season 9?

Yes, Inside No. 9 is coming to an end with its ninth season, naturally.

Co-creator Steve Pemberton was first to announce the news in December 2022, just prior to the broadcast of Christmas special The Bones of St Nicholas.

"We feel it is a good time to pause Inside No. 9 after we finish filming season 9 next year," he told The Sun.

"We’re not saying it’s over for good. After all, The League of Gentlemen came back [for anniversary specials], but we won’t be looking to make any more episodes for the time being."

The writer echoed this sentiment at a later fan screening, saying that the door to Inside No. 9. is ajar, not closed.

More recently, the duo told Radio Times that ending the show, while sad, is also a "massive relief".

What do we know about the Inside No. 9 season 9 episodes?

We now have details on where the first two episodes of Inside No. 9 season 9 will be set.

The first episode, Boo to a Goose, will take place on a broken down metro carriage, while the second episode will see a kindly stranger bring a vulnerable man back to his home.

At a screening last year, Pemberton admitted that it was difficult coming up with settings and scenarios for the final season, with so many variations already in the used pile.

"Generally speaking, we like to keep moving forwards," he said at the BFI. "We're not looking back at stuff that we’ve written because we think we can keep doing better, although it's hard now.

"We’re writing series 9 at the moment and, of course, it's hard because we have done so many ways of telling a story, and so many ways of turning a story on its head - and we don't want to repeat those."

Pemberton added: "We just want to give the audience the biggest surprises and enjoyable half-hour stories. That's the thing that's tricky, because by the time we finish we’ll have done 55 [episodes]."

Inside No. 9 season 9 cast

The cast of Inside No. 9 season 9 was confirmed in late 2023, including another Benidorm reunion for Pemberton (following season 8's Sheila Reid guest spot) as his former sitcom co-star Siobhan Finneran joins the roster.

She features in the first episode – Boo to a Goose – alongside Susan Wokoma (Chewing Gum), Charlie Cooper (This Country) and Joel Fry (Game of Thrones), Mark Bonnar (Guilt), Philippa Dunne (Motherland) and Matthew Kelly (Stars in Their Eyes).

In addition, fans can expect to see Eddie Marsan (The Winter King), Katherine Kelly (Mr Bates vs The Post Office), Vinette Robinson (Boiling Point), Adrian Scarborough (Gavin and Stacey), Hayley Squires (I, Daniel Blake) and Dorothy Atkinson (Mum).
