After years of fading fortunes, interest in Marvel has piqued once more with the one-two punch of Deadpool & Wolverine and Robert Downey Jr's return as Doctor Doom.

It's got us wistfully looking back at past entries in the MCU, including Disney Plus originals Loki (a prologue of sorts to Deadpool's latest outing) and WandaVision (which is to be revisited by September's Agatha All Along). Is it time for a re-watch?

While we're feeling nostalgic, we may as well celebrate the return of Futurama for the second season of its revived Hulu run, with Matt Groening's sci-fi comedy managing to cheat death more times than the God of Mischief himself.

Don't forget that other animated classics – including The Simpsons, Family Guy and American Dad! – are also available to stream on Disney Plus, providing hours of fun and belly laughs to get you through a lazy summer day.

For something with a bit more bite, check out recent originals and exclusives like Shardlake, Feud: Capote vs the Swans and Shōgun, as well as The Bear, which recently returned for its third season.

    Summary:

The mercurial villain Loki resumes his role as the God of Mischief in a sci-fi series that takes place after the events of Avengers: Endgame. Starring Tom Hiddlestone and Owen Wilson

    Why watch Loki?:

If Deadpool & Wolverine left you craving another Marvel romp, look no further than Disney Plus original Loki, which first established the Time Variance Authority that plays a crucial role in both stories.

Tom Hiddleston returns as the God of Mischief, who is plucked out of the MCU by the TVA having cheated death one too many times. He soon crosses paths with Agent Moebius (Owen Wilson), Hunter B-15 (Wunmi Mosaku) and Renslayer (Gugu Mbatha-Raw) among others, and starts to unravel the mystery of how they all ended up there.

Despite a change of talent behind-the-scenes and some real-world drama clouding production, Loki season 2 lived up to the success of the first, with Academy Award winner Ke Huy Quan (Everything Everywhere All at Once) getting involved in another gripping adventure through time. Trust us: you will not be ready for the series finale.

    Summary:

Animated American sitcom following the comic misadventures of Philip J Fry (Billy West), a New York pizza delivery boy who is unwittingly cryogenically frozen on the eve of the year 2000, only to awaken in a retro-futuristic 31st century in New New York. He ends up doing a similar job, delivering cargo this time instead of pizza. He is joined by a group of eccentric characters, including one-eyed mutant Turanga Leela (Katey Sagal), foul-mouthed robot Bender (John DiMaggio) and lobster-like alien Dr Zoidberg (West). They all work for Planet Express delivery service, which is run by the unpredictable Professor Farnsworth (West). Created by Matt Groening ("The Simpsons"), "Futurama" premiered in 1999. After initially ending in 2003, it was revived in 2007. The final axe fell in 2013 after the series had clocked up 140 editions.

    Why watch Futurama?:

While other streaming services have hit animated shows such as Invincible and Rick and Morty in their libraries, most would agree that Disney Plus has truly become the king when it comes to the animated sitcom. Alongside hundreds of episodes of shows such as Family Guy and The Simpsons, the platform also has another mega-hit in its roster, in the form of Matt Groening's Futurama.

The show has such a dedicated fanbase that it has been brought back time and again from cancellation, proving that it really is one to watch. Fans have enjoyed the adventures of Fry, Leela and Bender for years now, with the show having an anarchic sense of humour, as well as the opportunity to go to far-out, absurdist places that other series daren't.

    Summary:

Blends the style of classic sitcoms with the MCU, in which Wanda Maximoff and Vision - two super-powered beings living their ideal suburban lives - begin to suspect that everything is not as it seems.

    Why watch WandaVision?:

The first live-action streaming series from Marvel Studios – and arguably still the best – served as a sequel of-sorts to Avengers: Endgame and a loose interpretation of classic comic book storyline House of M.

Elizabeth Olsen and Paul Bettany reunite as Wanda Maximoff (AKA Scarlet Witch) and The Vision respectively, with the pair appearing to share an idyllic suburban life reminiscent of a vintage sitcom. However, it soon becomes apparent that things are not entirely as they seem.

Premiering after a Marvel drought and during a UK-wide lockdown, the initial interest in WandaVision was enormous, generating endless speculation from week to week on social media. The show's commitment to its sitcom homage during the first three episodes delighted some and frustrated others, but eventually gave way to blockbuster Marvel action.

If you've been considering a re-watch, now would be the perfect time as spin-off series Agatha All Along is just around the corner.

A trail of evidence leads to former Padawan student Mae (Amandla Stenberg), who has blossomed into a formidable warrior. Not everything is as it seems and Sol uncovers more clues that suggest he is a pawn at the mercy of sinister forces

    Why watch The Acolyte?:

The latest live-action Star Wars series has proven divisive among fans, but it has undoubtedly taken the franchise in a new, bold direction, telling a story set at the end of the High Republic era, approximately 100 years before The Phantom Menace.

The series takes the form of a mystery and crime show combined with a thriller, as it follows new Jedi characters investigating a series of crimes leading back to a Sith plot.

It features strong performances from Amandla Stenberg, who has taken on dual roles, and Squid Game's Lee Jung-jae, who learned English for his own role in the series. Featuring some hugely shocking moments and twists throughout, this new show might not be for everyone, but a number of fans have found a lot to enjoy.

    Summary:

Celebrated chef Carmen Berzatto returns home to Chicago to try to save his family's ailing sandwich shop. Comedy drama starring Jeremy Allen White

    Why watch The Bear? :

One of the most acclaimed shows on TV right now, The Bear has just released its third season, which is available to stream in full now on Disney Plus.

The show stars Jeremy Allen White and Ayo Edebiri as two chefs attempting to turn an old sandwich joint into a fine-dining restaurant, with plenty of soul-searching, stress and grief to muddle through along the way.

The show has consistently been put up for awards in the comedy categories, and it's easy to see why – it is often hysterically funny, in no small part thanks to the antics of Ebon Moss-Bachrach's Richie. However, it is also one of the most stirring, innovative and downright emotional dramas around right now, which gets right to the heart of the human condition.

The Bear is one of those shows which actually manages to exceed its own hype, meaning it's no surprise that it keeps managing to attract major A-listers for fun cameos along the way.

Mechanic Tylor Tuskmon hopes to rise through the ranks in an animated spin-off from Monsters, Inc.

    Why watch Monsters at Work?:

As Disney has looked to expand on some of its popular film franchises with streaming shows in the advent of Disney Plus, one which has stood out above some of the others is Monsters at Work, the sequel series following on from Monsters Inc and its prequel, Monsters University.

The series, which takes the form of a workplace comedy, follows Tylor Tuskmon, a new employee at Monsters Incorporated who dreamed of being a scarer, but has to find a new purpose in life after the factory has switched to laugh power.

Featuring the returning voices of Billy Crystal and John Goodman as Mike and Sully, the series starts out a little shaky and formulaic, but really finds its footing in its second season, which also features some other fun character reprisals from the films. It's funny throughout, has a well-developed central arc for Tylor, and is well worth the time of both younger and older audiences alike.

    Summary:

American medical drama following the tangled lives of interns, residents and their mentors at a fictional Seattle hospital. The title is a reference to Henry Gray's medical textbook Gray's Anatomy and main character Meredith Grey (Ellen Pompeo). It begins with Meredith, Alex (Justin Chambers), George (TR Knight), Izzie (Katherine Heigl) and Cristina (Sandra Oh) as interns in a surgical programme run by chief of surgery Richard Webber (James Pickens Jr). They are initially mentored by general surgeon Miranda Bailey (Chandra Wilson) and work closely with attending neurosurgeon Derek Shepherd (Patrick Dempsey) and cardiothoracic surgeon Preston Burke (Isaiah Washington). "Grey's Anatomy" premiered in 2005. It led to spin-off series "Private Practice".

    Why watch Grey's Anatomy?:

The longevity of Shonda Rhimes’s Seattle-set surgical drama is something of a medical miracle in TV terms. It launched almost two decades ago and consists of well over 400 episodes, all of which can now be found on Disney Plus – along with the latest season, which is dropping new episodes every Thursday.

The milestone 20th season looks poised to usher in some changes by its finale, with life at Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital rarely quiet for long. But with US ratings dropping following Ellen Pompeo's stepping back, one has to wonder if it's almost time for this resilient series to be discharged. At this stage in the game, there'd be no shame in it!

Whatever happens, Grey's will always be able to boast some incredibly memorable characters and multiple heartbreaking twists, which kept viewers coming back year after year. If you're yet to experience them, maybe now's the time.

Dark deeds are perpetrated in a 16th-century English monastery in a four-part thriller adapted by screenwriter Stephen Butchard from the first book in CJ Sansom's series of novels. Idealistic lawyer Matthew Shardlake (Arthur Hughes) works for Thomas Cromwell (Sean Bean) and is dedicated to serving justice and the Crown. He is flanked by cocky assistant Jack Barak (Anthony Boyle), who could be a spy for Cromwell. Shardlake is living with scoliosis and is rudely dismissed as a 'crookback' by Tudor society as he carries out his duties. Weathering the verbal abuse, Shardlake and Barak travel to the remote town of Scarnsea to investigate the murder of a commissioner, who was gathering evidence for Cromwell to close the local monastery. The duo are met with hostility and suspicion as they seek answers from Abbot Fabian (Babou Ceesay) and a secretive brotherhood including Edwig (David Pearse), Gabriel (Miles Barrow), Guy (Irfan Shamji), Jerome (Paul Kaye) and Mortimus (Brian Vernel)

    Why watch Shardlake?:

This excellent historical drama is based on CJ Sansom's Shardlake novels, and follows Tudor lawyer Matthew Shardlake, who is sent by Thomas Cromwell to investigate the murder of one of his commissioners at a monastery.

There's so much about this that works – sure, the murder mystery is a bit thin, but the historical detail, the political intrigue, the well-drawn, complex characters and the ominous, somewhat creepy atmosphere all work a treat, coming together in a bingeable, hugely enjoyable four-part series.

The stars are all excellent, particularly the central trio of Arthur Hughes, Anthony Boyle and Sean Bean. Here's hoping they get to return for a second season filled with further mysteries in the future.

They reevaluate everything they thought they knew about their mother and their origins

    Why watch Black Cake?:

Rich source material is reimagined as an eight-part fantasy by Riordan and co-creator Jonathan E Steinberg, laying the groundwork for a multi-year expansion covering the entire literary catalogue. Twelve-year-old Percy Jackson (Walker Scobell) is blissfully unaware that he is the product of a romance between his mortal mother Sally (Virginia Kull) and the god of the sea, Poseidon (Toby Stephens). Exposed as a demi-god, Percy attends Camp Half-Blood under the direction of Dionysus (Jason Mantzoukas) with his best friend Grover Underwood (Aryan Simhadri), who is actually a satyr. Together, they face erroneous accusations that Percy has stolen a thunderbolt belonging to Zeus (Lance Reddick). Annabeth Chase (Leah Sava Jeffries), a daughter of Athena, joins the quest and the three youngsters face terrifying adversaries including the gorgon Medusa (Jessica Parker Kennedy)

Why watch Percy Jackson and the Olympians?:

Move over, The Rings of Power and The Wheel of Time — there’s a new epic fantasy quest to get lost in, and it’s full of cheeky, youthful energy. As a trek across the country looms, a snappy sense of humour underpins the lush special effects and the story’s coming-of-age subtext about struggling to find one’s place in the world.

    Why watch Ahsoka?:

Before he was Star Wars’ jackbooted, imposing arch-villain, Darth Vader was a hero called Anakin Skywalker – and Anakin, like any Jedi worth his kyber crystals, had a young apprentice who he taught in the ways of the Force, the lightsaber and (most crucially of all) Jedi robe-swishing 101.

Now, Anakin’s apprentice Ahsoka – an alien character who wasn’t in the Star Wars movies, but has appeared in a few of the Disney+ TV shows – has her own adventure. At this point, Vader is long dead, but Ahsoka (Rosario Dawson) is keen that nobody tries to continue his dark legacy. Cue spaceship chases and twirling laser swords as she takes on the forces of evil, and meets a few familiar faces from her past.

    Summary:

"The X Files" is an American sci-fi drama following the exploits of FBI special agents Fox Mulder (David Duchovny) and Dana Scully (Gillian Anderson) as they investigate paranormal phenomena. Mulder believes in the existence of extraterrestrials, but Scully does not. She uses her skills as a forensic pathologist to try to debunk her colleague's outlandish theories. Although Scully is usually able to supply scientific explanations for unexplainable phenomena, she is rarely able to refute them completely. Their partnership poses a threat to a shadow element of the government known as the Syndicate. Led by the Smoking Man (William B Davis), they use any means at their disposal to cover-up any evidence supporting the existence of flying saucers and little green men. The series also focuses on Mulder and Scully's personal relationship as it develops from a purely working partnership into something a little more personal. For the last two seasons, Mulder's role was reduced as John Dogget (Robert Patrick) took his place in the department. Created by Chris Carter, it premiered in 1993 and ran for nine seasons, clocking up 202 episodes. Big-screen movies were released in 1998 and 2008. It can be seen on Sky Atlantic.

    Why watch The X-Files?:

The conspiracy theory industry in the US feels much more loaded and pernicious these days than it did when The X-Files made its debut 30 years ago. Now, it’s all talk of stolen elections and secret cabals of child abusers. But oh, for more simpler times when all that preoccupied fringe FBI agent Fox Mulder (David Duchovny) was the threat of an alien invasion being hushed up by shadowy forces at work in the government. He believed wholeheartedly that the truth was out there, despite partner and sceptic Dana Scully (Gillian Anderson) doing her best to debunk his outre ideology. The rest is the stuff of cult TV legend.
