They shared the pick on their Instagram accounts with the caption reading, “Our May book pick is CINEMA LOVE by Jiaming Tang. It’s a sweeping and tender novel about gay men in rural China and the women who marry them. 🩵🩵🩵” You can see the post here, and order the book today since it was just released on today, May 7.

‘Cinema Love’ by Jiaming Tang

Jiaming Tang’s debut novel is already getting so much buzz, and the plotline has people instantly adding it to their carts. The story spans post-socialist China, 1980s Chinatown, and contemporary New York, following two characters, Old Second and Bao Mei. Before they emigrated, they frequented a theater where gay men used to find love: where Old Second was a frequent visitor, and Bao Mei was the one who sold the tickets. However, things take a turn when Old Second’s sexuality is discovered.

This LGBTQ+ tale is beloved by readers and authors alike, beloved author Alice Hoffman even said this novel is “Exceptional, moving, and not to be missed.”

And today is the day you can snag it on Amazon.

Johnson revealed how she’s working to create a book club people can go to for beautiful reads. “TeaTime and I have an Instagram channel where you can have a chat with whoever signs up, and every few days we’ll be releasing a deep dive as we read along together,” she told Bustle.

Along with Cinema Love, Johnson has recommended The Hearing Test by Eliza Barry Callahan for the April Pick and Beutyland by Marie-Helene Bertino for March 2024.
