Why Zac Efron Was ‘Apprehensive’ About His Steamy New Movie With Nicole Kidman

Fans might be getting hot under the collar after seeing the new trailer for Zac Efron and Nicole Kidman‘s new romantic comedy, A Family Affair but the Netflix movie left Efron with butterflies for a different reason.

The upcoming movie, which also stars Joey King, Liza Koshy and Kathy Bates, is the latest from the producers of Anyone But You with Anne Hathaway and Nicholas Galitzine, and takes a page out of that playbook by showcasing another steamy affair between and older woman and a younger celebrity.

The movie follows Zara Ford (King), a young woman who works for a self-obsessed movie star Chris Cole (Efron) and finds out that her single mom Brooke (Kidman) is having an affair with him. From the trailer alone, it is clear that we’re going to see plenty of romantic scenes between Efron and Kidman but the former High School Musical star had his reservations about the project.

In April, the actor spoke to People about reuniting on-screen with Kidman, who he previously worked with in 2012 on The Paperboy, and admitted that some of the nerves he had about working with the Oscar-winner in his 20s reappeared when this project began.

“I was still a bit apprehensive but reuniting with Nicole is always so great and as talented as she as an actress, she is equally kind, caring, and wonderful to spend time with,” he said and promised that his chemistry with Kidman is “seamless, natural and fun.”

King also had a lot of praise for Kidman calling her “iconic” and gushing that she is excited for fans to watch Kidman and Efron “looking so hot on screen.” She also added: “It’s truly one of those moments where you have to remind yourself that it’s actually your life and you’re getting to work with this person, and somehow they’re even more wonderful than you could imagine.”

While King’s character seemingly disapproves of her mom’s romance, and is doing everything she can to stop it, King definitely seems on board for Kidman and Efron’s chemistry. In the movie, Zara is trying to protect her mom from getting hurt and enlists the help of her best friend (Koshy) and her grandmother (Bates) for advice but Kidman’s character is trying to balance her daughter’s wants with her own needs as her love story with Efron’s character unfolds.

“A Family Affair” streams worldwide June 28.
