Puss in Boots is purring over another box office win, after stealing Tower Heist‘s laughs and harshing on Harold and Kumar’s buzz this weekend.
The box office estimates are in: Antonio Banderas and Salma Hayek‘s Puss in Boots danced circles around the competition. Ben Stiller and Eddie Murphy’s Tower Heist and A Very Harold & Kumar Christmas performed, but not well enough to knock Puss out of his boots.

Thanks to good word of mouth, Puss in Boots not only stole the weekend, but has banked $75.5 million total since opening to a box office win last week.
Leonardo DiCaprio‘s J. Edgar and Adam Sandler’s Jack and Jill are sure to shake up the top ten next weekend, but there isn’t much family competition coming to threaten Shrek‘s suave pal. In other words, Puss in Boots probably still has a few moves left in him. Tower Heist and A Very Harold & Kumar Christmas, however, will definitely have to contend with Sandler, DiCaprio and other new releases (see below).

Tower Heist had a reasonable, but unexciting start. Unfortunately, instead of riding its multiple star power to a blowout opening, the film came in below Ben Stiller and Eddie Murphy’s past openings.
A Very Harold & Kumar Christmas managed to stay in the game thanks to 3D prices, with almost everyone who bought a ticket opting for the glasses. The opening weekend was just a bit behind that of its predecessor, Harold and Kumar Escape from Guantanamo Bay, but the Christmas film is getting good word of mouth, which is often money in the bank.
new Nov. 11 box office contenders
This week, Clint Eastwood‘s much-hyped J. Edgar hits limited release on Wed, Nov. 9 and then goes wide for the weekend. The biopic, which stars DiCaprio and Armie Hammer, premiered at the AFI Film Fest last week, but hasn’t been seen by the masses yet.
The other new releases for Friday, Nov. 11 are Jack and Jill, in which Adam Sandler teams up with Katie Holmes, Al Pacino and himself in drag; Tarsem Singh’s 3D action adventure Immortals, starring Henry Cavill, Mickey Rourke and Freida Pinto; and the horror film 11-11-11.
Indie movie fans will want to keep an eye out for upcoming limited releases The Conquest, Cook County, Eames: The Architect and the Painter, The Greening of Whitney Brown, Into the Abyss, London Boulevard, Melancholia, Thrive and Elite Squad: The Enemy Within.
