A 5-Ingredient Grilled Pizza Recipe That’s Easier Than Ordering Takeout

Fall may be just around the corner but we have a little bit of grilling weather left — and you’d better believe we’re going to make the most of it. We’ve been grilling everything from our veggies to our cocktails this summer, but the best (and the easiest) meal to make on the grill is pizza. This grilled pizza recipe is completely customizable, and playing around with different toppings and flavor combinations is both a fun experiment for kids and a great way to use up the leftovers from your farmer’s market haul. I chose to make a Caprese-inspired pizza because I have a basil plant that just won’t stop growing and my love for tomatoes is neverending, but you could easily tweak this recipe and top your pizza with something fancy like caramelized onions, goat cheese, and prosciutto or make it super simple and stick with classic cheese and pepperoni.

First, here’s what you’ll need to get started. I recommend prepping all of your ingredients before you start grilling because once the dough is on the grill, you won’t have much time to prepare your toppings.

Kenzie’s grilled pizza recipe

Ingredients:

  • Store-bought pizza dough
  • Pizza sauce
  • Shredded mozzarella cheese
  • Cherry tomatoes
  • Fresh basil

Directions:

  1. Allow the dough to come to room temperature so it’s easier to shape. Dust your hands with flour and shape the dough into a rectangle on a baking sheet. Try to ensure the dough is the same thickness throughout so it cooks evenly.
  2. Heat the grill to roughly 450 degrees. Gently peel the pizza dough off the baking sheet and place it directly onto the grill. It will lose some of its shape, but that’s OK. It adds to the rustic look of this meal.
  3. Close the lid to the grill for 3-4 minutes.
  4. Open the grill and use a metal spatula (plastic will melt!) to gently lift up the edges of the crust. If they easily separate from the grill and there are bubbles forming in the center, the crust is ready to be flipped. If not, close the grill and let it cook until the crust bubbles and easily lifts off the grill.
  5. Once it’s ready to be flipped, use your metal spatula to flip the crust and reduce the heat to low.
  6. Add your sauce and toppings.
  7. Close the lid and grill until the crust is cooked and your cheese has melted. Because you’ve reduced the heat to low, this could take 5-10 minutes.
  8. When your pizza is ready, transfer it back to the baking sheet, allow it to cool slightly, slice with a pizza cutter or knife and enjoy!
