Stranger Things’ Sadie Sink & Maya Hawke Surprise Gaten Matarazzo at His Dear Evan Hansen Debut

Part of the Stranger Things cast had the most adorable reunion on Tuesday night, bringing Hawkins, Indiana to the Big Apple.

On July 19, actresses Sadie Sink and Maya Hawke showed up to New York City's Music Box Theatre to surprise their co-star Gaten Matarazzo at his debut performance in the Broadway musical Dear Evan Hansen. Gaten plays supporting character Jared Kleinman in the Tony Award-winning musical, a sarcastic close friend of Evan Hansen's.

While speaking to Teen Vogue in June, Gaten shared that he was both nervous and excited for his next Broadway stint, since the last time he sang professionally long-term was pre-puberty, before his voice changed. But that's where good, supportive friends come in — to help celebrate and uplift you through the nerves.

Gaten, who plays Dustin Henderson in Netflix's Stranger Things, was joined by his Stranger Things co-stars Sadie Sink (who portrays Max Mayfield) and Maya Hawke (Robin Buckley) on the night of his debut performance.

The official Instagram account of Dear Evan Hansen shared some pics of the trio together near the stage, with the caption: “Things got a bit strange on Broadway tonight!” In additional photos, Sadie and Maya can be seen talking to Gaten while he sits cross-legged on the theater stage, and playfully posing with playbills from the show in front of each other's faces. Gaten's role in Dear Evan Hansen marks his official return to his Broadway roots, as the 19-year-old has previously performed on Broadway in Priscilla, Queen of the Desert and Les Misérables. Gaten is a member of the final cast of Dear Evan Hansen, and will play Jared until the production closes on September 18.

"Words could never express how truly honored I am to be a part of this company," Matarazzo said about his initial casting in a statement, per Playbill. "This show has taught me so much about myself and to be able to participate in any capacity, let alone on Broadway, makes me want to melt. I am ecstatic to be back on stage and eternally grateful for the opportunity."
