Vanessa Morgan is revealing more details about her newborn son, including the meaning behind his name — and, well, it has nothing to do with Riverdale as fans previously thought.
In a now-expired Instagram Story, Vanessa explained why she and Michael Kopech decided to name their son River. “Early on in my pregnancy, I was walking the River every day,” she explained, noting that the habit gave her a ton of peace. “I knew that was the perfect name for his lil soul. Plus, Michael and I really wanted a nature name.”
While it might not be the Toni Topaz tie-in fans predicted, the name is endlessly adorable. Vanessa officially revealed River’s name in an Instagram post on February 4, sharing a picture of his tiny little hand and describing the experience of becoming a mother as “beautiful” and “challenging.” The Riverdale star added, “On January 29th, Michael & I welcomed our beautiful baby boy River into the world. Words cannot describe this kind of love. We are enjoying this time home with him, being present, & giving him all the lovin in the world.”

While River’s IG debut was a cute one, it’s likely that fans won’t be seeing a lot of Vanessa and Michael’s new addition. When announcing her pregnancy last summer, the actor explained that she wanted to keep her future child out of the public eye — at least until he’s old enough to decide what kind of social media presence he wants. “I have had the blessing of growing up in the public eye having started my acting career at age 6,” Vanessa explained at the time. “While this has been incredible for me, I am very much looking forward to giving this little guy some room to grow up outside of the public eye, until he tells me otherwise.” Totally understandable! In the mean time, we’ll take any details Vanessa feels like sharing — and the meaning behind River’s name is about as sweet as it gets.
