The Illinois Fighting Illini came away with the mini No. 3 over No. 2 upset in their game against Iowa State. They had a 36-26 lead at halftime, and while it was closer in the second half, Illinois escaped with a 72-69 win. Terrence Shannon Jr. had 29 points, five rebounds, and two assists.
Marcus Domask had seven points, six rebounds, and five assists. They shot 42.1% from the field, 31% from three-point range, and held Iowa State to under 40% shooting from the floor while they made 46.2% of their threes on 13 attempts.
As for UConn, they shellacked San Diego State in a rematch of the 2023 national championship game. They won 82-52, with four players scoring double-digit points. These players included Cam Spencer (18 points, five rebounds, and three assists), Tristen Newton (17 points, seven rebounds, and four assists), Stephon Castle (16 points, 11 rebounds), and Hassan Diarra (10 points, four rebounds, and four assists). Donovan Clingan had eight points and eight rebounds, which speaks even more to how impressive this win was.
They shot 46.2% from the floor, 38.5% from three-point range, and San Diego State shot 36.2% from the floor and under 23% from three-point range. UConn out-rebounded San Diego State 51-30.

While we can’t deny the success of Illinois in this tournament with Shannon Jr., UConn is simply far too loaded. They have five or more players that can go for double digits, while Illinois runs mostly through the success of Shannon Jr.
