Customers in New Jersey will see the most closures as ten stores are axed.

"Howell and Jackson are included, so sad. The town is going to have nothing left," wrote Michael Franzone in a Facebook post.

Howell Township is about an hour east of Philadelphia.

Locals said they preferred Stop & Shop over ShopRite because the latter is "always chaos."

"I was hoping Howell would stay open. ShopRite will raise prices once again," commented a shopper.

Customers of the nearby Carlstadt store were equally torn up about the closures.

"So sad for the community in Carlstadt! It's a great store, serving so many people!" commented Rose Plosia on a Facebook post.

"A great pharmacy is lost too."

Another shopper raved about the pharmacy as well.

"The Carlstadt pharmacy is outstanding. Pharmacist Jack and hiss staff have always been so friendly and pleasant and gone above and beyond," replied Jade Garland.

"They will be greatly missed."

After the closures, Stop & Shop will have 359 locations.

WHY ARE STORES CLOSING?

Company president Gordon Reis said the closures would create a healthy base for the brand's future growth.

"Stop & Shop has evaluated its overall store portfolio and made the difficult decision to close underperforming stores to create a healthy base for the future growth of our brand," he said in a press release.

Employees will be offered positions within the company.

"We’re taking these learnings and implementing them at other stores as we build upon our strong foundation," he said.
