COSTCO stores are a great option for customers who enjoy picking up groceries and other household goods in bulk, but the retailer does require shoppers to pay yearly membership dues.

While the warehouse chain is open nearly year-round, Costco does operate under limited hours – or shuts down for an entire day – on select federal holidays.

What are Costco's opening hours?

Costco stores usually open their doors between 9 am and 10 am local time, and close down around 8:30 pm on weekdays.

Most Costco stores are also open from 9:30 am until 6 pm on Saturdays and from 10 am until 6 pm on Sundays.

Opening times also vary between stores, so shoppers should double-check with their nearest Costco warehouse in advance to avoid any shopping mishaps.

Shoppers can also find the Costco closest to them by using the company's Find a Warehouse feature online.

Costco also offers several services at its warehouses, like gas stations, pharmacies, food courts, and even optical departments.

Those may have different opening and closing times from the actual store, e.g. opening later than the warehouse, or closing down earlier than the actual store.

For warehouse service hours, use the Find a Warehouse feature, and then select the Store Details section.

Any service with the same hours as the store itself will have just a phone number listed next to it, while services with different hours will note their own opening and closing times.

For shoppers on the go, the Costco app also offers up-to-date opening and closing times for all stores.

It’s also free to download on the iTunes or Google Play app stores.

Does Costco close for any holidays?

Costco stores are usually closed on select federal holidays.

Select Costco locations may also open later, or close earlier, on other holidays or holiday-adjacent days of the year, including:

During the Covid-19 pandemic, Costco offered healthcare workers, first responders, and seniors an extra hour of shopping, typically one hour before opening its doors to all of its members.

However, those hours officially ended in April 2022, and most stores have shifted back to normal operating hours for all members.

Some locations may still offer additional hours for seniors, members with disabilities, or members who are immunocompromised, so again, shoppers are encouraged to check in with their local Costco warehouse.

What are the rules for shopping at Costco?

There is technically one caveat for shopping at Costco – it's a members-only club.

Costco warehouses are not open to the public, which means customers need to purchase one of three annual memberships to shop at the big-box retailer.

Gold Star membership costs $60, includes a free Household Card, and is valid at all Costco locations worldwide.

This option is the best for single customers or families.

Costco's Business Membership also has a $60 fee, includes a free Household card, and is valid at all Costco locations worldwide.

This membership also allows members to purchase items for resale, but customers must provide Costco with any appropriate resale information.

Business members can also add affiliate cardholders for $60 per person.

Costco's Executive Membership costs $120 – this includes a $60 membership fee, along with a $60 upgrade fee.

This membership offers additional benefits and greater savings on Costco Services, extra benefits on select Costco Travel products, and an annual 2% Reward on qualified Costco purchases.

Memberships are valid for one 12-month period from the date of enrollment.

Shoppers are required to show their membership cards when entering a Costco warehouse, and when checking out at a payment register.

All membership FAQs, rules, and restrictions can also be found on Costco's website.
