Following three Beverly Hills cop movies between 1984 and 1994, Eddie took a 30-year hiatus from the acclaimed role of Axel Foley, a Detroit cop who gets out of his depth in California as he hunts down his best friend's killers.

A fourth film was first announced in the 1990s but was indefinitely shelved - until this year.

Now, fans of the franchise who waited decades to see it aren't holding back their praise.

"Was watching Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F. An entertaining nostalgia-heavy sequel. Eddie Murphy is in top form," one fan wrote on X.

"Without going into details this Beverly Hills Cop is [fire] definitely on par with the first 2," another wrote.

"Beverly Hills Cop was excellent!" a third added.

"Ladies and gentlemen, THIS is how you bring back a classic," another added in response to the trailer.

"Well played netflix Well played. This was f**king seamless perfection."

Eddie revealed that the new movie, which premiered on Netflix on Wednesday, has gone through near-continuous struggles for the past three decades.

“We’ve been trying to develop another Beverly Hills Cop since 1996," the actor told the New York Times.

"The third film we did in 1994, I didn’t think the movie came out good.

"There’s been ten different scripts and a bunch of different producers and we just tried for years and years and it wouldn’t come together until we got Jerry (Bruckheimer) back involved, the original producer. Then it all came together.”

The film follows Axel, in his trademark Detroit Lions varsity jacket, and his old friends as he returns to Beverly Hills after someone threatens his daughter Jane, played by Taylour Paige.
