“With the mentorship of Christine Duffy, MD, Director of the Adult Cancer Survivorship Program at the Lifespan Cancer Institute and breast cancer survivor, and Don Dizon, MD, Director of Pelvic Malignancies at Lifespan Cancer Institute – himself a parent of three via surrogacy – I developed a study to evaluate the fertility counseling that cancer patients receive at the time of their diagnosis, with particular attention to surrogacy. Knowing about these options could be helpful for some women yet the literature on counseling and use of surrogacy among cancer patients is virtually nonexistent, despite it being a viable option for parenthood in those facing cancer-induced fertility challenges.

To better understand women’s knowledge and experiences regarding surrogacy we created a one-time, online, anonymous survey distributed to AYA women cancer survivors nationwide. With this survey, we intend to capture the experience of navigating challenging fertility options amid a cancer diagnosis – with a focus on surrogacy counseling. From our phase I survey validation interviews with 17 cancer survivors, it became readily apparent that the counseling patients receive is not enough, and themes of identity, self-sufficiency, and regret revealed just how essential this work is. We are excited to distribute this survey through Stupid Cancer and reach AYA patients affected by cancer and infertility,” shares TCM supporter @alexa_steckler in a recent article with @stupidcancer. A lot can happen in 19 years.

Since the last time my Nikes pounded 26.2 miles of New York City pavement, everything globally, personally, professionally…. has changed. In 2005, participating in the New York City Marathon was about pride, accomplishment and conquering what I believed to be a New York City right of passage.

I had not yet experienced my first cancer diagnosis (let alone #2 or #3). This first-time marathon runner had no idea what was in store for her...and what we could all do collectively to right the wrongs for women newly diagnosed with cancer seeking fertility preservation.

Flash forward to 2024: I’m racing like a girl alongside other dedicated members of The Chick Mission flock to brighten fertility futures for women when they need it most. Every single step I take through the five boroughs will remind me of our collective resilience and that women are built to do hard things. All these years later, the feat of strength will mean even more. I run this race for each of the women who’ve inspired me and The Chick Mission.

This morning, Oklahoma’s Governor Stitt signed @corinnes_law (SB 1334). Going forward, fertility preservation will now be covered for oncofertility patients across the state!!!

Since 2021, we’ve been working tirelessly to make this mandate possible. And this session, WE DID IT. We couldn’t be more grateful for your support in helping us make this change; every single call and letter made the difference. Most importantly, we’re honored to make the trailblazer that was Dr. Corinne Dinges proud. Corinne, your legacy lives on 💛
