The Crown has a new — and final — Princess Diana: Elizabeth Debicki will play the late royal in the last two seasons of the show, which will include her separation from Prince Charles and up until her death in 1997. The Netflix show, which wrapped filming on its fourth season before the pandemic, will feature newcomer Emma Corrin as a younger Diana in season four, which will cover the late ’70s up until the early ’90s (it’s set to come out this fall, and while there’s no trailer yet, some set photos have leaked).
Debicki is an extremely tall Australian actress best known for her role as Jordan Baker in Baz Luhrmann’s The Great Gatsby, and also stars in Tenet, which Christopher Nolan thinks he’s going to release in theaters later this month. “Princess Diana’s spirit, her words and her actions, live in the hearts of so many,” Debicki said in a message shared on the show’s Twitter page. “It is my true privilege and honor to be joining this masterful series, which has had me absolutely hooked from episode one.”
Debicki is the latest addition to a stacked cast of prestige British actors that will finish out the series, which will follow the British royals until the early 2000s (unfortunately, we will not get to see Meghan and Harry’s story play out, on this show at least). Also joining the show’s fifth season is Imelda Staunton (a.k.a. Dolores Umbridge), who will replace Olivia Colman as Queen Elizabeth II, and Leslie Manville, who will step in for Helena Bonham Carter’s Princess Margaret. Gillian Anderson is set to play Margaret Thatcher, and Jonathan Pryce will replace Tobias Menzies and his jawline as Prince Philip.
