Eddie Murphy Confirms Shrek 5 In The Works, And Guess Which Character Is Getting Their Own Movie

Actor Eddie Murphy has confirmed that he already started recording for Shrek 5 and believes it will be released in 2025.

The 63-year-old actor who brings the voice of Donkey to life in the franchise made the revelation in an interview with Collider.

“We started doing Shrek 4 or 5 (it’s 5) months ago,” the Coming to America actor stated. “I did this, I recorded the first act, and we’ll be doing it this year, we’ll finish it up.”

Shreks one, two, and three were all released between 2001 and 2007. The last installment of the movie series was Shrek Forever After in 2010.

That means almost 15 years after the last film we might finally see what Shrek and his pals are up to.

Murphy’s work as Donkey earned a BAFTA Award for Best Actor in a Supporting Role nomination while also winning the Annie Award for Outstanding Achievement for Voice Acting in a Feature Production.

Shrek 5 In The Works And A Spinoff For Donkey

Fans of Eddie Murphy’s work are in for an extra special treat. Aside from Shrek 5, fans will also get to see Donkey in his very own movie!

“Shrek is coming out, and Donkey’s gonna have his own movie. We’re gonna do Donkey as well,” Murphy said. “So we’re gonna do a Shrek, and we’re doing a Donkey.”

“No, not at the same time,” he quickly clarified. “I started recording Shrek, I think it’s coming out in 2025, and we’re doing a Donkey one next.”

A new Shrek film and a possible origin story for Donkey?

As Murphy’s character might say: “It’s gonna be champagne wishes and caviar dreams from now on!”

That’ll Do, Donkey … That’ll Do

The Shrek franchise, consisting of six films, has been highly successful, earning $1.56 billion in the US alone.

Aside from the four Shrek movies, there have been two spinoffs for Puss in Boots, a character played by Antonio Banderas – 2011’s Puss in Boots and 2022’s Puss in Boots: The Last Wish.

In an interview with eTalk last year, Murphy expressed his desire to do a Donkey movie and suggested it would do even better than Puss in Boots.

“I’d absolutely be open if they ever came with another Shrek, I’d do it in two seconds. I love Donkey,” he said.

“You know, they did Puss in Boots movies. I was like, ‘They should have did a Donkey movie. Donkey is funnier than Puss in Boots. I mean, I love Puss in Boots, but he ain’t funny as the Donkey.”

They should have. And now they finally will.
