Harry Shearer: ‘Liam Gallagher thought Spinal Tap was real’

The Spinal Tap actor and voice of Mr Burns on The Simpsons, 80, on jazz, disagreeing with Elon Musk and getting the band back together

Born in Los Angeles, Harry Shearer became a child star on the radio show The Jack Benny Program before going on to study political science at UCLA and Harvard. In 1979 he was hired as a writer for Saturday Night Live. He co-wrote and starred in 1984’s cult mockumentary This Is Spinal Tap and has provided voices for characters in The Simpsons, including Mr Burns, Smithers and Principal Skinner. He is married to the singer Judith Owen and lives in New Orleans.
