Wednesday TV: Psych Finale, Family Goes to Vegas, Live TV on TV Land

As USA Network's Psych hangs up its pineapple after eight seasons of tomfoolery — or should it be called Shawn-foolery? — mystery takes even more of a back seat to comedy than usual in the series finale (Wednesday, 9/8c), ominously titled "The Breakup." While there is a murder to be solved (frequently referred to as "our last case"), it's a perfunctory distraction at best to Shawn's main concern: how to tell Gus that their bromantic partnership may in fact be over. The chemistry between James Roday and Dulé Hill is never better than when there's something actually at stake, so in between the proliferation of in-jokes (one in particular will tickle longtime USA viewers), fans can enjoy a satisfying reckoning for one of TV's most enjoyable buddy relationships. A SURE BET: The adults of ABC's Modern Family (9/8c) go on a road trip to Las Vegas, resulting in one of the series' most classically farcical outings in quite some time. Comic surprises and complications lurk behind every hotel door, with the gawky Stephen Merchant providing priceless accents as an ever-present valet attempting to exercise discretion no matter how berserk the action gets. Among the colliding subplots: Phil auditions for a secret magic society (whose members include a snarky Patton Oswalt), while Cam abandons Mitchell in the spa to sneak out to a bachelor party for Mitchell's ex (the suddenly ubiquitous Fred Armisen), who mistakes everyone's intentions. Some of the biggest laughs are reserved for Gloria, who's desperate to keep Jay from noticing a store displaying "Rebarka," a female version of the despised dog butler Barkley. (And yes, there's a "doggie in the window" joke.) Jay, however, is distracted because he's just discovered that the exclusive "Excelsior" floor on which he's boastfully booked his family isn't the hotel's most elite level. This episode hits the jackpot.

In other ABC comedy news, who would ever have predicted The Middle's Sue Heck being in the predicament of having too many prom dates? That happens in this week's episode (8/7c), while romance is in the air on Suburgatory (8:30/7:30c), as Lisa proposes to Malik, inspiring Tessa to fight for Ryan (Enlisted's Parker Young).

THE WEDNESDAY GUIDE: TV Land goes live with the season premieres of Hot in Cleveland (10/9c) and The Soul Man (10:30/9:30c). On Cleveland, the ladies head to a hideout after Victoria's husband escapes from prison, and find themselves surrounded by scene-stealers including Community's Ken Jeong and Trophy Wife's adorable Albert Tsai. The very busy Betty White moonlights on the guest list of the Soul Man opener (simulcast on BET and Centric), along with Brandy and Martin Lawrence, as Boyce stages a live concert to help keep the lights on at the church's summer camp. ... Look for sparks to fly on The CW's Arrow (8/7c) when the Huntress and the Canary face off during a hostage crisis. ... In what sounds like an "uh-oh" moment, Rayna's daughters meet Luke's moody teenage son while the parents are on tour in ABC's Nashville (10/9c). ... The night's non-fiction highlight: National Geographic Channel's Brothers in War (8/7c), narrated by Charlie Sheen, in which members of the Vietnam War's Charlie Company infantry unit reflect on their harrowing tour of duty.
