We might be headed to 1924 with the just announced Season 2
The Yellowstone prequel 1923 is just days away from returning from a month-long midseason break (the last episode aired all the way back on Jan. 8). But the month off wasn't just for rest and relaxation; in addition to prepping the final four episodes of Season 1, it appears creator Taylor Sheridan and Paramount+ were behind the scenes in negotiations, because Paramount+ announced that 1923 would be returning for a second season.
Set 40 years after the events of first Yellowstone prequel 1883, 1923 follows another set of Duttons — played by Harrison Ford and Helen Mirren — as they try to survive drought, disease, and economic upheaval in the wild Mountain West while interlopers try to take their land. Somebody's always trying to take their land! The show streams exclusively on Paramount+.
Here's everything we know so far about 1923, including the premiere date, cast, how to watch, and what we can expect for this generation of the Dutton family.
1923 has been renewed for a second season. On Feb. 3, Paramount+ made the news official during the midseason break in Season 1, but did not provide any details on when we can expect it, who will be returning, how many episodes there will be, or what it will be about (which makes sense given that Season 1 isn't even over yet!).
TV Guide's Liam Mathews reviewed the 1923 series premiere, calling it "an ambitious undertaking with a ton of potential that will give fans of Yellowstone a series that at times feels familiar and other times feels like it's expanding what Yellowstone can be." Read the review.
The spin-off, which was originally titled 1932 before producers changed the year in which it's set, takes place during the Prohibition era following World War I, with Montana experiencing an economic collapse ahead of the Great Depression. This sets the story about 30 or 35 years before the birth of Kevin Costner's character, John Dutton III, and about 40 years after the events of 1883.
The official show description reads, "1923 focuses on the Dutton family's next two generations as they struggle to survive historic drought, lawlessness and Prohibition, and an epidemic of cattle theft; all battled beneath the cloud of Montana's great depression, which preceded the nation by almost a decade."
The Yellowstone Universe Explained: Every Show, How to Watch, Dutton Family Tree, and More
1883 followed the Dutton family's journey across the plains to Montana and explained how they came to settle there instead of their original destination of Oregon. Before James (Tim McGraw) and Margaret (Faith Hill) could make it all the way to the Pacific Northwest, their teenage daughter, Elsa (Isabel May), was shot through the liver by a Lakota arrow. James took her to die in a picturesque Montana valley that then became the Dutton homestead. Elsa's younger brother, John, then presumably grew up to carry on the Dutton name and honor his sister, though that part of the story is not entirely clear yet, and is expected to be revealed in 1923.
The full-length trailer for 1923 arrived during the fourth episode of Yellowstone Season 5 and gave us a much better idea of what the new series is going to be about. The Duttons are well-established on their ranch in 1923, but yet another "range war" is on their hands as developers, cowboys, and hunters seem to want a piece of the land themselves. And while you may think having to face off against Harrison Ford for some acres is a bad idea, that's nothing compared to the fury it looks like Helen Mirren's Cara is going to bring to the people who cross her.
The first teaser trailer for 1923 arrived during the Season 5 premiere of Yellowstone. Not only did it give us the first footage of Helen Mirren and Harrison Ford inside the Yellowstone universe, but the trailer featured a very familiar sounding voice over. It was Elsa (Isabel May) from 1883 who introduced the new series, explaining that the Duttons have always been cursed with or follow violence over a montage of several stressful shoot-outs and tense scenes.
Paramount+ sent shockwaves across the internet when it was announced that Harrison Ford and Helen Mirren would lead the new series, and we now know that they'll be playing the brother and sister-in-law to Tim McGraw's James Dutton from 1883.
Paramount+ revealed the full cast list, as well as confirmed who Ford and Mirren were playing, in early September.
1923 premiered on Paramount+ on Dec. 18, 2022. New episodes are rolling out Sundays on the streaming service.
Paramount has not officialy confirmed the number of episodes in 1923, but Taylor Sheridan told Deadline that it will consist of two eight-episode seasons, or "blocks," as he calls them. The show is set and filmed in Montana, as well as South Africa, Kenya, Tanzania, Zanzibar (an archipelago that's part of Tanzania), and Malta.
1923 streams exclusively on Paramount+, just like 1883.
Paramount+ will also be home to spin-off 1883: The Bass Reeves Story, while fellow Yellowstone spin-off 6666 will air on Paramount Network. Yellowstone streams on Peacock.
