YOU Ditches Lifetime for Netflix for Season 2

YOU is moving on up for its second season. The stalker thriller, which aired its first season on Lifetime this fall, is moving to Netflix, Variety reports.

The decision actually makes a lot of sense, despite Lifetime already having renewed the series for Season 2 earlier this year. While YOU debuted on Lifetime in the U.S., Netflix acquired the exclusive international rights to the series, meaning that it would air as a Netflix original outside the U.S. The first season will be made available to stream globally through Netflix on Wednesday, Dec. 26. No premiere date for the second season has been announced.

This is the second time this year that an already-renewed scripted Lifetime series has been moved to a streaming service. UnREAL's fourth and final season aired on Hulu, which surprise-dropped the season all at once in July.

If you ask us, YOU moving to Netflix is an amazing decision, both for the series and for fans. Anyone who watched the first season -- which stars Penn Badgley as bookstore manager who stalks an aspiring writer (Elizabeth Lail) and will do whatever it takes to get close to her -- knows that the 10 episodes were an absolutely batsh-- wild ride that was just asking to be binged. Every episode featured another crazy twist, and now we won't have to wait a full week to find out what's next. This is what Michael Scott would call a win-win-win situation.

Additionally, the move to Netflix allows for more flexibility when it comes to the content the streaming service allows that YOU might not have gotten away with on cable TV. "The show will stay fundamentally the same," showrunner Sera Gamble told Vulture in regards to the move. "Yeah, we can take a few things to the next level, but I do think that we have been telling the story we set out to tell... Although not having to count the number of times we say the word 'fuck' will be fun."

We may also get to see longer episodes in Season 2, says Gamble. "Every now and again, there's an episode that we work really, really hard to do, tell the stories as perfectly as we can in that exact window of 43 minutes, and a couple of more minutes wouldn't have hurt. I don't know that we'll be making these endless 63-minute episodes, necessarily, but having wiggle room creatively takes a little bit of pressure off."
