In the first season of this drama based on the Canadian book series by Janette Oke, a refined young woman named Elizabeth Thatcher (Erin Krakow) leaves the big city behind and accepts a teaching position in a Canadian frontier town. Shortly after her arrival, a horrific mining accident occurs, and her students struggle to cope with it. Elizabeth bonds with many of the newly widowed women, especially Abigail Stanton (Lori Loughlin), and she devises a way to keep the widows in town. Constable Jack Thornton (Daniel Lissing) doesn't warm up to Elizabeth's charms as quickly as the other townsfolk, but he acts jealous and over protective when a new man in town shows a romantic interest in her. Upon learning Jack's true feelings, Abigail gives him advice about the best way to approach Elizabeth. Meanwhile, Abigail investigates the mine explosion.
