Born in New York City in 1986 and raised in Manhattan, Matt McGorry began performing at a young age, as a magician. As a pre-teen, McGorry tried his hand as a street magician and was the youngest member of the New York International Brotherhood of Magicians. His flair for performance was put to use in his high school years, when he attended New York City's LaGuardia High School of Music & Art and Performing Arts, a new iteration of the school made famous in the movie "Fame" (1980). After graduation, McGorry got his degree from Boston's Emerson College and emerged determined to test the waters as an actor, but also as a competitive bodybuilder.

On the acting side, McGorry landed a number of buff-guy roles in short comedy films for establishments like College Humor and The Onion, but soon realized that his physique might lead him to be typecast, so bodybuilding was pushed to the side. He appeared in guest roles in a number of TV series, including procedural drama "Person of Interest" (CBS 2011-), and medical dramedy "Royal Pains" (USA 2009-) before landing his first recurring role as conflicted prison guard John Bennett in the highly lauded Netflix Original show "Orange Is the New Black" (Netflix 2013-). Then, in 2014, McGorry was put in the enviable position of being in two hit shows at the same time when he became a regular on the Shonda Rimes show "How To Get Away With Murder" (ABC 2014-), starring Oscar winner Viola Davis.
