WordPress is a popular content management system (CMS) for building websites. It’s especially useful for business owners who want to develop a custom website, not use a ready-made template.

While you can build your website using WordPress CMS, if you want to put that website online for other people to find, you’ll need a service to “host” it. Web hosting services are secure digital storage spaces for online content.

Our research team surveyed WordPress-friendly hosting providers, looking at features, customer support, reputation and price. Below, we highlight some of our favorite affordable providers, so you can find the best cheap WordPress hosting service for your business.

Methodology

We extensively research the key competitors within an industry to determine the best products and services for your business. Our experts identify the factors that matter most to business owners, including pricing, features and customer support, to ensure that our recommendations offer well-rounded products that will meet the needs of various small businesses.

We collect extensive data to narrow our best list to reputable, easy-to-use products with stand-out features at a reasonable price point. And we look at user reviews to ensure that business owners like you are satisfied with our top picks’ services. We use the same rubric to assess companies within a particular space so you can confidently follow our blueprint to the best cheap WordPress hosting in 2024.

Expert score (10%): Each provider we surveyed was awarded an expert score by our editorial team. This is based on four components, each weighted equally: features, value for money, popularity and ease of use. We considered each of those points from the perspective of a small business owner specifically. For example, having a domain name and business email included can streamline admin and cut costs.

Value (30%): Small business owners don’t have the massive budgets of huge corporations, making value an important consideration when selecting a WordPress hosting service. Is it affordable, and are you getting a good bang for your buck? We first checked if pricing was publicly available. We then compared the availability of pricing models, such as monthly, annual, biennial and tri-annual plans. We also noted whether the posted prices increased after an initial introductory offer.

Features (46%): Our research team selected a number of general features that we believe small business owners would value in a WordPress hosting service, including unlimited storage and bandwidth, uptime guarantee and security features like automatic backups and SSL certificates. These features help to ensure websites run smoothly, quickly and safely.

We also looked for perks like the inclusion of a free domain name and business email address, as well as free domain name privacy, which can help safeguard business owners’ identities online. We additionally looked for one-click WordPress installations and cPanel availability, two features that help improve usability. Other features we considered included the availability of a website builder and a CDN.

Service and support (8%): Our service and support assessment of WordPress hosting providers was based on the availability of four types of support: live chat, phone, email and a self-help knowledge base. Each of these types of support was weighted equally to assess the overall support availability. This assessment is distinct from the actual testing of the live chat support described in each provider’s “support” assessment above.

Customer ratings and reviews (3%): For all of the WordPress hosting services listed here, we checked the Trustpilot rating. Trustpilot compiles information from real-world users on everything from technical functionality to customer service performance and potential scams. We have only included providers with a 3.5 or higher rating on Trustpilot, ensuring a minimum standard in terms of reputation.

What is cheap WordPress hosting, and how does it work?

WordPress is a popular CMS that you can use to build a business website. For your customers to actually find that website, you need to put it online using a hosting service. WordPress hosting services are optimized for websites powered by WordPress CMS. These providers may have unique features, like one-click WordPress installation, to simplify your website setup and management.

How to choose the best cheap WordPress host

There are a lot of different WordPress hosting services on the market, giving business owners a great selection of options to choose from. The only problem? The variety of possibilities can be overwhelming! Below, we’ve outlined some key features to look for to help you narrow it down.

Key features to look for

If you’re a small business owner trying to decide on a WordPress hosting service, there are a few core features that you shouldn’t compromise on. Here’s what we consider the most important must-have functions:

  • Sufficient storage: If you are going to have a large website with a lot of content, especially content like videos and images, ensure your storage needs will be met. Ideally, you’ll get unlimited storage.
  • Unlimited bandwidth: Bandwidth impacts how fast your website loads. You don’t want to risk frustrating users with slow load times.
  • One-click WordPress installation: This simplifies set up and saves you time and trouble. We’ve only included providers on this list with one-click setup.
  • Uptime guarantee: You don’t want to place your website with a host that has a lot of technical difficulties leading to internet downtime. Look for uptime guarantees; reputable providers usually have these at 99%.
  • Automated backups: Regular backups of your website help protect you in case the site is hacked or otherwise compromised.

Add-ons and extras

The above features are all non-negotiables, as far as we’re concerned. Here are some other perks that are “nice to have” but not necessarily a deal-breaker if you don’t need them:

  • Domain name: If you haven’t yet purchased a domain name for your business, having one included with your hosting plan can save you money.
  • Business email: A business email that aligns with your domain name can make your business look more professional.
  • Domain name privacy: Domain name privacy is often sold as an add-on by hosting services. If you want to keep your data secure, we recommend paying for this add-on. It can help protect against everything from spam to identity theft.

Customer service

As a business owner, the last thing you want is additional stress because your website isn’t working due to hosting issues. Luckily, 24/7 live chat customer service seems to be the industry standard among the WordPress hosting providers we surveyed. We tested out the offering ourselves and, for the most part, were able to confirm the availability of customer support agents using live chat, even at odd hours (weekends and late nights).

How much does cheap WordPress hosting cost?

The best cheap WordPress hosting plans we surveyed ranged from less than $10 to upwards of $20 per month. Many plans offer more affordable rates if you sign up for a longer subscription period.

An annual plan may be cheaper than a monthly plan, for instance. There are also providers offering 24- and 36-month plans. By signing up for a long-term plan, you may be able to reduce your WordPress hosting costs.

Most WordPress hosting services offer various tiers of plans. While lower-cost plans may be more affordable, they may have limited functionality. For example, some providers may only include a free domain name with a higher-tier plan.

Backups are another example of a feature that may vary according to the plan tier, with lower-tier plans offering no or limited backups (for instance, only weekly) and higher-tier plans including more regular backups (say, daily). Make sure to compare not only providers but also the tiers of plans offered before signing up.

Frequently asked questions (FAQs)

WordPress is a content management system (CMS) that can help you create a website. However, to actually put your website online where others can find it, you need a hosting service. There are web hosting providers optimized to support sites created with WordPress.

Yes, you can host a WordPress website for free using a WordPress.com free plan. However, note that WordPress.com places ads on its free websites. This can make your business website look less professional.

WordPress hosting providers we surveyed ranged from less than $10 to upward of $20 per month. You may be able to save money by opting for longer-term plans. For instance, some providers will offer cheaper monthly rates if you buy a 12- or 24-month plan.

With managed plans, the web host takes care of updates, security patching and software installation. With unmanaged plans, you don’t get these benefits; all you get is access to the hosting company’s server. Managed hosting is usually recommended for small- to medium-sized businesses without dedicated IT teams.

Many WordPress hosting services will take care of the migration for you, either for no fee or a low cost. You provide the migration team basic information about your website, and the host will migrate it.
