About the BJ’s One Mastercard

The BJ’s One Mastercard, which replaced the BJ’s Perks Plus Mastercard, is issued in partnership with Capital One and Mastercard. The card earns notable cash-back rewards at BJs and offers an upfront discount at the pump on BJ’s Gas, earning 3% cash back on eligible BJ’s purchases, 10 cents off per gallon at BJ’s Gas and 1.5% cash back on other purchases.

This card doesn’t have coveted features like a welcome bonus or 0% introductory APR, but for those who regularly fill up their carts and cars at BJs, it can score some significant savings. If you rarely shop or get gas at BJs, a more general purpose cash-back card will be a better fit, or consider a card that offers high rewards on groceries and gas. We have some suggestions below.

Pros

  • Cash-back rewards: Earn 3% cash back on eligible BJ’s purchases, 10 cents off per gallon at BJ’s Gas and 1.5% cash back on other purchases (excluding BJ’s Gas).
  • No cap on rewards: There’s no limit to the amount of rewards you can earn and your points never expire.
  • Upfront discount on gas. Most credit cards offer cash-back but when you buy gas at a BJ’s location with this card, the savings are immediate at 10 cents off per gallon.

Cons

  • Membership fee: Applying for this card requires a $55 annual membership fee for BJ’s.
  • Limited gas savings: You’ll only save on BJ’s gas, so this gas credit card may not be worth it if you frequent other stations.
  • Ongoing rewards rate is just OK. The base earning rate on non-BJ’s spending can easily be bested by cards that offer 2% cash back or more.

BJ’s One Mastercard Rewards

The BJ’s One Mastercard comes with 3% cash back on eligible BJ’s purchases, 10 cents off per gallon at BJ’s Gas and 1.5% cash back on other purchases.

Once you’ve accrued at least $10 in rewards, you can redeem them at checkout, either in the club or online. But the purchase amount has to be greater than or equal to the reward amount you’re redeeming.

BJ’s One Mastercard rewards potential

Using government data and other publicly available information, we estimate that a U.S. household in the U.S. that would be in the market for this card has an annual income of $84,352 and $25,087 in expenses they are likely to be able to charge to a credit card.

Here’s what that household might earn with the BJ’s One Mastercard:

SPENDING CATEGORYSPENDING AMOUNTCASH-BACK RATECASH BACK EARNED

$180
Other
$19,087

$286.31
TOTAL
$25,087
$466.31

That comes out to a grand total of $466.31 in annual rewards, not including the discounts on BJ’s gas or subtracting the annual BJ’s membership fee.

APR

This card comes with a 20.24%, 26.24% or 30.24% variable APR, and there’s no introductory APR offer on purchases or balance transfers. Those who qualify for the lower APR range are on a par with the average credit card interest rate in the U.S., but the high end of the range is above average. If you typically carry a balance, you’d be better off with a card with a lower APR, even if it doesn’t earn you any rewards on your spending.

How the BJ’s One Mastercard compares to other cash-back cards

BJ’s One Mastercard vs. Bank of America® Customized Cash Rewards credit card * The information for the Bank of America® Customized Cash Rewards credit card has been collected independently by Blueprint. The card details on this page have not been reviewed or provided by the card issuer.

With the Bank of America credit card, you have broader opportunities to earn cash, since you earn 3% cash back in the category of your choice, 2% cash back at grocery stores and wholesale clubs (on up to $2,500 in combined choice category/grocery store/wholesale club quarterly purchases) and 1% cash back on all other purchases. With Bank of America’s Preferred Rewards® program, those earning rates can be increased as much as 75% by keeping a significant chunk of cash in eligible accounts.

The Bank of America Customized Cash Rewards credit card also has some valuable features you won’t get with the BJ’s One Mastercard including a 0% intro APR for 15 billing cycles for purchases and for balance transfers made within the first 60 days, then a 19.24% to 29.24% variable APR applies. A 3% intro balance transfer fee will apply for the first 60 days; then a 4% fee applies to future balance transfers. There’s also no annual membership fee and $200 cash rewards bonus after spending $1,000 on purchases in the first 90 days of account opening.

BJ’s One Mastercard vs. Capital One Walmart Rewards® Card * The information for the Capital One Walmart Rewards® Card has been collected independently by Blueprint. The card details on this page have not been reviewed or provided by the card issuer.

The Capital One Walmart Rewards Card lets you earn bigger rewards than the BJ’s One Mastercard. You’ll get 5% cash back on Walmart.com & in the Walmart app, 2% cash back on restaurants and travel, and at Walmart Stores, Walmart & Murphy USA fuel stations and 1% cash back everywhere else. You can redeem your rewards for cash, purchases, gift cards or travel.

Like the BJ’s One Mastercard, the Walmart Rewards card is available for applicants with good to excellent credit, but Walmart does not have an annual membership fee.

BJ’s One Mastercard vs. Capital One Venture Rewards Credit Card

The Capital One Venture card is a better option than the BJ’s card if you’re looking for travel rewards, but you’ll need excellent credit to qualify.

While the Venture card comes with a $95 annual fee, you’ll earn 5 miles per $1 on hotels and rental cars booked through Capital One Travel and purchases through Capital One Entertainment and 2 miles per $1 on other purchases. Plus, you can earn 75,000 miles after spending $4,000 on purchases in the first three months of account opening.

Should you get the BJ’s One Mastercard?

If you’re a frequent BJ’s Wholesale Club shopper, it could make sense to apply for this card. Not only can you save money by shopping at a wholesale club like BJ’s, but you’ll also get cash back for purchases, and you can reduce your gas expenses by filling up at BJ’s Gas.

But if you rarely shop at BJ’s or fill up your car with BJ’s gas, you’ll be better off using a different store card or cash-back card. You can likely find better perks with another card, including a welcome bonus, low introductory APR and no annual membership fees.
