Offering pet insurance since 2000, Seattle-based Trupanion can pay your vet directly if the vet has Trupanion software. You can also contact Trupanion 24/7 to get pre-approval before your pet receives care. This can help you make the best decision for your pet and your budget. 

Although Trupanion doesn’t offer a wellness plan, it offers three optional coverage riders: complementary and recovery care, pet owner assistance and a breeding pet rider. Trupanion is one of the most expensive carriers we reviewed and it did not make our rating of the best pet insurance companies

  • Boarding.
  • Cremation or burial expenses.
  • Elective or cosmetic procedures.
  • Exam fees.
  • Losses due to war, invasion, riots, nuclear reaction and other hostilities.
  • Pre-existing conditions.
  • Racing or intentional injuries.
  • Routine and preventive care.
  • Spaying or neutering.
  • Transportation expenses.

Trupanion pet insurance review FAQs

No, Trupanion pet insurance provides unlimited annual coverage. Once you have met your deductible, you will only be responsible for 10% of the remaining balance for covered expenses, with no cap on coverage.

Trupanion pet insurance does not offer a wellness plan. The company is there to help with emergency veterinary care for your pet’s accidents and illnesses, but not routine and preventive care.
