Honda extended warranty

Key points
  • Honda Care offers exclusionary or powertrain coverage for up to 8 years/120,000 miles.

  • The plan includes roadside assistance, rental coverage, trip interruption and concierge service.

  • Honda’s extended warranty quotes are generally affordable compared with other companies.

Honda repair costs are generally affordable — 34% lower than the industry average, according to RepairPal — but that doesn’t mean expensive breakdowns don’t happen. Major repairs for aging vehicles can cost hundreds or thousands of dollars, and it’s important to budget for them accordingly.

You can get a Honda extended warranty to cover costs after the factory warranty expires, but is it the best option? In this article, we look closely at Honda Care and compare it with some of the best extended car warranties on the market.

What does a Honda extended warranty cover?

Honda’s extended warranty is called Honda Care, and it offers two types of coverage that can last up to 8 years/120,000 miles. Honda’s factory bumper-to-bumper warranty lasts for 3 years/36,000 miles, and you have until that warranty expires to add a Honda Care extended plan.

Below are the main details on the Honda Care extended warranty.

Honda Extended WarrantyPlan Details
Exclusionary coverageThis bumper-to-bumper plan covers any breakdown except for a list of exclusions. It comes in new, pre-owned, certified additional and certified used additional coverage varieties, depending on the vehicle’s condition.
Powertrain coverageThis plan covers essential components such as the engine, transmission and drive axle. It’s available for standard and certified used vehicles.

The Honda Care vehicle service contract covers mechanical breakdowns but not normal wear and tear or maintenance items. The plan covers genuine parts and factory-trained Honda technicians. You can take the car to any Honda dealer for coverage in the case of a breakdown. If none are within towing distance, Honda will authorize another repair facility.

Honda extended warranty added benefits

Honda Care plans come with a few benefits besides mechanical breakdown coverage:

  • 24-hour roadside assistance: Covers lockout assistance, towing, spare tire change, fuel delivery and battery jump-start
  • Trip interruption benefits: Reimburses for food and lodging up to $100 per day for three days following a mechanical breakdown over 100 miles from home
  • Rental car reimbursement: Covers up to $35 per day for six days in the case of a covered repair
  • Concierge services: Provides hotel reservations, airline information, rental vehicle information, message relay and directory assistance

The first three benefits above are fairly standard in the extended warranty industry — all of our recommended providers offer them, too. Honda’s concierge services, on the other hand, are unique in the industry.

Honda extended warranty exclusions

Honda’s extended warranty doesn’t cover everything. For example, it won’t cover situations that auto insurance can cover, such as damage from accidents, vandalism or environmental events.

You must use and maintain the car according to its design — damage from misuse including off-roading or racing isn’t covered. Honda also won’t cover damage from lack of maintenance.

Here are a few more items Honda Care doesn’t cover:

  • Body panels
  • Glass
  • Maintenance items
  • Tires
  • Trim
  • Upholstery

Does Honda offer a maintenance plan?

All new Hondas receive free maintenance through Honda Service Pass for the first 2 years/24,000 miles. This includes oil changes, tire rotations and multipoint inspections during that time. Honda’s Maintenance Minder system will let you know when your car needs service.

Honda offers a variety of options to cover maintenance services after that point. Here’s a look at them:

  • Sentinel Services: Covers oil changes plus roadside assistance, trip interruption and concierge services
  • Sentinel Wrap Services: Covers oil changes and tire rotations plus roadside assistance, trip interruption and concierge services
  • Sentinel Plus Services: Covers oil changes and mechanical and electrical coverage, as well as roadside assistance, rental cars, trip interruption and concierge services
  • Honda Care Maintenance: Covers oil changes, tire rotations, filter replacements and fluid replacements, plus multipoint inspections
  • Honda Care Maintenance Wrap: Adds extra coverage at time of purchase, plus tire rotation and oil change after 2 years/24,000 miles

What is Honda’s factory warranty?

All new Honda vehicles come with a new vehicle limited warranty that covers any breakdown or mechanical defect for 3 years/36,000 miles (minus exclusions). New cars also come with a powertrain warranty that lasts for 5 years/60,000 miles. This covers the engine, transmission and drivetrain.

The manufacturer’s warranty also includes other plans such as these:

  • Federal Emissions Warranty (coverage for parts varies)
  • Hybrid Powertrain Warranty (coverage for parts varies)
  • High Voltage Battery Capacity Warranty for 8 years/100,000 miles
  • Seat Belt Limited Warranty for 15 years/150,000 miles
  • Rust Perforation Limited Warranty for 5 years/unlimited miles
  • Accessories Limited Warranty for 3 years/36,000 miles

How much does a Honda extended warranty cost?

Our team received Honda Care quotes ranging from $735 to $1,285 for a 2022 CR-V with 20,000 miles. While Honda doesn’t offer extended warranties online directly, we received quotes from online provider CurryHondaCare.com, which offers factory warranties.

If you think $735–$1,285 sounds cheap for a warranty, you’re right. The quotes we received covered 80,000–120,000 miles on the odometer and three to five years after the plan purchase. Even though the 2022 CR-V technically had another year of factory coverage at the time of the quote, the cost is around $320–$370 per year of coverage. This is much cheaper than the $848 industry average per year of coverage that we found from third-party providers.

Below are some of the quotes we received. You can see there are multiple mileage options for each yearly term.

Plan Term$0 Deductible$100 Deductible
3 years from purchase/80,000 odometer miles$835$735
3 years from purchase/120,000 odometer miles$1,135$1,035
4 years from purchase/80,000 odometer miles$915$815
4 years from purchase/120,000 odometer miles$1,255$1,155
5 years from purchase/80,000 odometer miles$955$855
5 years from purchase/120,000 odometer miles$1,285$1,185

What does the average extended warranty cost?

The average extended warranty from third-party providers costs $2,804–$3,151, depending on the plan type and company. These extended warranty costs are higher than Honda Care costs, which maxed out at $1,285 for our quotes. However, you can get third-party extended warranty plans after the Honda factory warranty expires, and they can last up to 200,000 miles or more.

Here are the average plan estimates based on quotes we received from eight reputable third-party auto warranty companies:

Extended Warranty TypeTotal Cost
Bumper-to-bumper$2,804
Midlevel$3,151
Powertrain$2,807

Is a Honda extended warranty worth it?

A Honda extended warranty can be worth it if you get a good price, and a longer warranty extending beyond 100,000 miles will be more likely to cover claims. Hondas are reliable vehicles with low ownership costs, so it’s worth comparing coverage plans and estimating how much repairs would cost you out of pocket before buying a plan.

Are Hondas reliable?

Honda owners reported 206 problems per 100 vehicles within the first three years, while the industry average was 190 problems, according to the J.D. Power 2024 U.S. Vehicle Dependability Study. While Honda doesn’t have the best rating overall, J.D. Power ranked the Honda Civic among the top three most dependable compact car models — along with the Toyota Corolla and Toyota Prius.

Honda owners pay $428 per year on average for maintenance and repairs, according to RepairPal. This is much lower than the industry average of $652 per year. RepairPal ranked Honda as the No. 1 reliable car brand and noted that Honda repairs are less frequent and severe than industry averages.

Of course, repair costs aren’t always spread out evenly over time. You might not have any major repairs for a few years and then run into an expensive issue. But overall, Honda’s ownership costs are lower than those of most other brands.

How much are Honda repairs?

Honda parts are generally affordable and available from any licensed repair shop. Still, that doesn’t mean expensive repairs can’t happen. Below are a few repairs and their average costs, according to RepairPal.

Honda RepairAverage Cost
CR-V air conditioning compressor replacement$901–$1,331
CR-V power steering control module replacement$713–$731
Accord turbocharger assembly replacement$1,269–$1,368
Accord coolant reservoir replacement$262–$276

Where should you buy a Honda extended warranty?

You can buy a Honda Care warranty by contacting your local Honda dealership. That said, a quick online search will show multiple authorized providers that also offer Honda Care. Either way, you can only buy a Honda Care contract before the vehicle reaches three years or 36,000 miles.

In contrast, third-party warranty companies such as Endurance offer contracts after the factory warranty expires. Honda covers up to 120,000 miles, but you can find third-party extended car warranty coverage that lasts up to 200,000 miles and beyond for more peace of mind.

Manufacturer vs. third-party extended auto warranties

Below, you can compare Honda with three reliable extended car warranty companies. The main differences are the number of protection plans and the maximum mileage limits.

What’s next?

Since Hondas have lower ownership costs than other brands, you might not use a warranty very often. But if you find one for a good price, it can be worth it to cover occasional expensive breakdowns. Consider third-party options to cover a Honda past 120,000 miles, when the likelihood of breakdowns increases.
